C.B. Cebulski has been named Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Entertinmant, with Axel Alonso stepping down from the post to depart Marvel entirely.
“It’s crazy. It’s an honor. I’m blown away by the opportunity,” Cebulski told the New York Times.

Cebulski entered the comic industry in 1997 as editor for Central Park Media Corporation's CPM Manga. He left that company in 2001, and after a brief stint as a freelance editor on titles such as Noble Causes, joined Marvel.In 2002 he started at Marvel, writing for the company's Marvel Mangaverse line and soon joined as an Associate Editor under Ralph Macchio. Cebulski rose through the ranks, and oversaw the launch of Runaways, Wolverine: Snikt, and NYX.
In 2006, Cebulski departed the publisher to pursue freelance editing and writing work including several of his own Image titles, but returned to Marvel within a year as an editor/talent scout, establishing the Talent Management department. In 2010, Cebulski was promoted to become Marvel's head talent scout as Senior Vice President of Creator & Content Development. As part of that position, Cebulski oversaw a team of staffers to recruit, manage, and coordinate creators in tandem with Marvel's comic book editors. In 2016, Cebulski was sent to work and live in Shanghai as Marvel's VP of International Business Deveopment & Brand Management. Cebulski explained that job as developing the company's brand in Asia.
“Spending these last 18 months in Asia, and introducing more fans here to the depth of the Marvel Universe, I’ve seen first-hand how our comics and characters constantly bring joy into people’s lives all over the world," Cebulski explained in Marvel's official statement. "I hope to continue capturing that creative magic here at home, and deliver inspirational and entertaining stories that are true to the classic Marvel DNA, but built with an expanding global mindset.”
According to Marvel's release, Cebulski will oversee all day-to-day editorial and creative aspects of Marvel Comics, while continuing in his role expanding Marvel into new countries.
“C.B. is one of the most well-known, liked and respected editors and personalities in the comics industry. He has a keen understanding of the Marvel brand, and knows the importance of publishing within the larger Marvel ecosystem,” said Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley in a statement. “As our characters continue to reach unprecedented levels of global popularity, we need to ensure our core comic business sets the standard with fresh and compelling graphic storytelling that excites both our longtime fan base and new fans. Marvel has set a high bar for super hero stories for over 75 years, and we believe C.B. is perfectly positioned to take Marvel Comics to new heights.”
No reason for Alonso's departure or his destination were given. Alonso's exit marks the second major departure from Marvel in as many weeks, with prominent writer Brian Michael Bendis departing for an exclusive with DC Comics.
