Avoiding a Logo Backlash

Why change the logos for such an institution? It's old enough to have historical weight, and the detail is much higher than the new one. I noticed that minimalist design is prettty much what people have been moving toward in design of everything now- and I like that, but some things shouldnt be changed.

lol, this was a big issue on the news when I was in the bay last week. everyone said it looked like a dookie in the toilet

that's not the first thing I think of, but I don't think it's a good logo
