For as bad as the season has gone, we're starting to see Quin's imprint on the team in terms of playstyle and player development. The player development is starting to mirror the Coach Bud days when cats like Bazemore, Carrol, Korver, etc. went from low-level rotation guys to high-level role players.
Quin seems to love the point-forward archetype that can push the tempo on the break or be a great secondary facilitator in half-court sets. The defense has also come along as well as we see a ton more active hands and communication.
The elephant in the room is how will all of this look once Trae returns? Hopefully he's back before the end of the year so we can get a proper assessment.
One other big caveat is the impact Bruno is having with his size and physicality. His presence on the floor is huge because he's active and his playstyle adds a much more physical dynamic to our team. I think he's played well enough in this sample size since OO has been out to warrant 20 mins per night as the primary backup big.
But then that leave's the question, what happens with Big O? Can he play PF? Can he be a full-time Center at his size? No need to have him as a backup big when Bruno fills a void this team desperately needs.
I would like to see this lineup: Clint, Big O, JJ, DJ, Trae with Dre coming off the bench if we get everyone back in time.
As far as player development goes...
shyt has been looking good to be honest. Each of the following players have been able to increase their value from where it was at the beginning of the season...
JJ - Strong candidate for MIP this year and has All-Star trajectory starting next season. His next steps is to become the best player on this team as he have the tools to average 25 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast nightly.
Dre - Has definitely increased his stock with a much more refined role. He's playing with a lot of physicality and scoring at every level. Still super solid defensively. He's actually in the role of a 3 and D player instead of trying to be the 3rd best player behind Trae and DJ.
Bruno - Showing he's a capable backup Big and brings a ton to the Hawks with size, physicality, a growing offensive skillset, and seems to be a vocal leader.
Kobe - Since coming back from injury, found his pace and shooting touch in College Park and looks to have the framework to be a great POA defender. Can he turn into a Jrue Holiday type impact-player?
Vit - Another College Park guy that has been refining his role to be successful in the NBA and definitely within Quin's system. He's basically has a similar skillset to JJ but in a smaller package/frame. He's looking like a player to keep around to continue to develop as he is a a fit for Quin's system. Would like to see him continue to hunt his shot. If he can shoot the 3 in at 38%+, he suddenly becomes a capable role player.
Will be interesting to see the impact College Park have on AJ, Lundy, and Gueye once they're healthy.
