Bob Arum Not Surprised Canelo Withdrew Cotto Offer
Posted by: Steve Kim on 1/19/2015

Veteran promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank tells BoxingScene.com that he wasn't surprised when Oscar De La Hoya announced on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas that Golden Boy Promotions and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez were rescinding their offer to Miguel Cotto on a proposed showdown that would have taken place on May 2nd.

"No [I wasn't surprised by what happened], I think that what Oscar did was demonstrate his tremendous frustration with the Cotto side. I mean, after all, they started the negotiation making a demand and finally after all this rigamoroo, the 'Canelo' side acceded to the demands and Oscar assumed that would be it [and] the fight would happen - and apparently that wasn't the case," Arum said to BoxingScene.com.

Top Rank has a working relationship with the Puerto Rican star, but not necessarily an exclusive promotional contract.

As for what Cotto does next, Arum admitted - "We have no inkling of what Cotto does, now. Hopefully in the next couple of days we will."

There is speculation that Cotto could be in line to face Floyd Mayweather, once again. The two faced each other in 2012 with Mayweather winning a decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

I'd like to see the "Demands" Cotto was putting out, but at the same time why are they even bringing up the May 2nd date when the obvious Elephant in The Room hasn't been situated yet? and Oscar himself said, "If the Mayweather vs Pac fight happens, we'll move from May 2nd". So which is it? You making the Cotto vs Canelo fight anyway for May 2nd, and if Mayweather vs Pac is announced you're gonna just change the date and venue after the contracts are signed? :childplease: and if HBO and Showtime and co hosting the fight (May vs Pac), why the fukk would they promote another fight with a big named opponent on the same fukkin day?

Let's put things into perspective, both Cotto and Canelo need each other to make big bank, BUT....Canelo is the one who needs Cotto a lot more at this point than vice versa, and I'm someone who's dying the see the fight. On the surface it looks like Cotto flat out ducked Canelo, but I think by May 2nd Canelo and Golden Boy will be lookin like :shaq2:

I did read Cotto's lawyer saying Money was a sticking point.

"It's always the financial side. There was no agreement on that," he said. "I don't know what would have happened if we had more time. If Oscar doesn't have more time, he doesn't have more time. It's a great fight, but Miguel doesn't need it for his career. So if it doesn't happen, so be it. He's OK. No problem. If Oscar needs to move he needs to move. We're not going to go back to them. We'll huddle and meet Miguel on Tuesday, and we will start planning."

Was thinking........Cotto's manager talks on the regular with Haymon. Cotto also isn't exclusively working with HBO. That said, could Peter Quillin be an option somewhere down the road? He is a Haymon fighter. Cuban American vs. Puerto Rican would definitely make people tune in. I'd like to think Haymon advised Quillin to forsake 1.7 million and his strap for a good reason.
