Are staircases leading to the kitchen common, or is this a sitcom thing?

Cosby Show, Full House, Step By Step, Family Matters, Boy Meets World, and I’m sure others all have homes with a main staircase in the living room, and a back staircase from the kitchen.


I don’t think I’ve ever been in a home with both staircases. Was this a common home design, or was this mostly for sitcoms?

my grandparents house had that

You could sneak in the back door and up the kitchen stairs or escape quickly when company came over

they eventually expanded the bathroom and closed the stairway off though

I saw one house like that when I was looking at homes but most modern houses with 2 staircase is 5000 sq ft. My x had one like that steps went up from the kitchen and had Grand staircase center of house

It’s very rare in real life. They do it just to make it easier to have people enter the scene.

Some large homes have 2 stair cases though.
I remember my dad’s friend had two staircases. I’m guessing he put that in after the house was built.

My aunt and uncle lived in a house like that. A few houses in their neighborhood were built like that. A lot of older houses here have unique features like that, or laundry chutes, and dumb waiters. At one point those were middle class or well to do areas before white flight.
