This is my opinion on this. It started with all the Americas funniest videos stuff. Then people started seeking out content like that. The more embarrassing the better. that somehow turned into creating the content yourself, meming and humiliating people.

Used to be they only did these videos of pros doing silly stuff during games. Now they'll make a clip of a 10 year old football player getting trucked by a 150 lb 5th grader a funny video.

Combine that with the anonymity of the internet and how cynical people are because our country sucks for working class people here we are.
