Say brehs, im thinking of relocating out of state. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to deal with companies while applying? Obviously I can't schedule interviews or anything like that. Has anyone done this before?

I generally move somewhere because I want to live there, not for a job so I move there first then apply...

One time I applied for a bunch of jobs and stayed with friends for a month.

Yeah, I've done that four times. Apply to a job out of state in another city and then move after getting a job offer.

Basically, you send out a ton of applications. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Jobs are few and far between. You'll get more rejections than possible interviews, unless you are a superstar employee/college student. Keep your options open and apply to as many jobs as possible.
Then, when you get an interview, you can ask to have a phone interview since you are coming from far away. They might offer that first knowing that you are not nearby. Then, if you get past the phone interview, they'll want to interview you personally. This will require travel. In every case, it required me to drive and stay at a hotel/motel overnight. I went the day before, checked in, then got up early, checked out and went to my interview, and drove home afterwards. In every case, it involved a long drive, not a flight.

In these out of town interviews, you have to be on your A game because it's all wasted time and money if you go in with a defeated or non-confident attitude. Read up on interview skills online. You might be good or bad. But it's good to read up. No one is a professional interviewee. We just do it when we need a job so we aren't doing it all the time.

Good luck.

it depends on the job but this is gonna be pretty damn hard. theyre going to have plenty of applicants who are in-state and can interview easily, those people will get priority. also no employer wants to be responsible for somebody moving cross-country for nothing if the job doesnt work out

Trying to do the same thing myself. Had an interview for a job in San Diego but it turned into a complete fiasco so I stopped pursuing it. Still looking though.

Depends.

If you have qualifications they are looking for that they don't see in other candidates, they'll call you in.
