Apple said to halve orders for iPhone 5 displays, possibly due to 'weaker-than-expected' demand | The Verge

We haven't heard much about iPhone 5 sales since it first launched this past fall, but according to The Wall Street Journal, the device has received "weaker-than-expected demand." The newspaper cites people familiar with the matter who say that Apple has cut its orders for iPhone 5 parts. The only explicit example of such cuts is that orders for displays during the January to March period have been slashed in half, according to sources. Only one source is cited as saying that the order decrease expands beyond screens.

It's important to note that a drop in part orders does not necessarily mean that iPhone 5 sales are disappointing. Apple could be prepping for a new model and it already has all the components it needs until it's released, or the company could be switching part suppliers. However, a separate report from Nikkei corroborates that iPhone 5 screen makers Sharp and Japan Display have had their orders for displays cut in half during the first calendar quarter. According to the report, Apple had planned to source a total of 65 million displays from the two companies during that period, but that number has been reduced "in response to lower than planned global sales of Apple's iPhone 5." Nikkei adds that Apple previously took on "more than half of the investment costs" at one of two Japan Display factories that manufactures screens for the iPhone 5. LG is Apple's other major manufacturer of iPhone 5 displays, behind Sharp and Japan Display, but it isn't clear that its orders have also sustained cuts.

The consumer is starting to realize that they've been practically been using the same phone with marginal upgrades for years now.

The whole allure to having an iPhone because "it's an iPhone" is wearing off now. Seems like everyone can see this except for iStans.

The weird screen size was a mistake. Hopefully Apple makes the next screen a proper size. The iPhone 5 was a wack upgrade from the 4s.

We'll see the real results around the 25th when they announce Q1 Sales.

In the Past Year they've done

Q1 - (Oct-Dec 2011) - 37,044,000 (4S launch)
Q2 - (Jan-Mar 2012) - 35,100,000
Q3 - (Apr-Jun 2012) - 26,000,000
Q4 - (Jul-Sep 2012) - 26,900,000 (1/2 month iPhone 5)

if they announce anything less than 50m (based on growth from previous iphone to iphone), it'll show the conflating factors of Samsung barrage (they just did 62m), Maps fiasco, no Jobs, etc. had enough influence to turn-off the "automatic" Apple upgraders & the hype wake.

if they announce above it, it's business as usual.

I'm seeing the Note 2 everywhere. Galaxy came through and crushed buildings.

They need to stop with that 16x9 screen. The 10 days I owned the iPhone 5 it never felt comfortable. I'm predicting a 4.3 near edge to edge iPhone 5S in April

I might be one of the few people that likes that iphone 5 screen. I hate how big phones are now. I got the i5 today because the note is friggin gigantic. I just need my phone to do smartphone stuff. Calender, notes, calls text, surf, music, and a few games. Basic shyt like that. I don't watch movies on my phone, and I wouldn't get a huge screen to watch some ratchet ass worldstar vids. So... :manny: I like it.

Ironically the 16x9 does help with viewing movies on the go...too bad its a SMALL ASS screen. I think 4.3-4.5 is the sweet spot as long as the bezel is kept small
