Sony should have NEVER downplayed online gaming back in the PS2 era.

Cause Microsoft saw that, and jumped on the online infrastructure with the OG XBox and Halo 2, while Sony was BSing around and half assed it.

Then the 360 got a year head start at the end of 2005 and a revamped XBox Live with online play from the jump. PS3 was released late 2006 and only started to take online play serious, but by then it was too late. M$ is still in the game 3 generations later, simply of the moves they did from 2001 to 2005.

You forgot the PS3 Gen where all those 3rd party exclusives went to XBox because the recession slowed growth of the PS3 installer base. Those 3rd party companies were about to go under, until the American and European market saved their asses. Sony underestimated online play and M$ making inroads from 2005 to 2010.
