I never beat Gears 2 because I thought it sucked and was depressing.

Gears 3 is very nice, though.

Yeah, I think you can just hop in random matches. Not sure though.

I only played through it once, but it was with people on my Friend's List.

The online is fukking glorious, feature-wise. The gold standard for online console gaming.
