Didn't Lincoln write in his memoirs that he only freed the slaves because he had to

"If I could win this war without freeing one slave, I would."

Or something to that effect.

And aren't there several letters that lincoln wrote to generals that basically stayed "i am freeing the slaves so they can fight for us northerners and help us win this war"

When the war first began, and northern generals were freeing slaves, didn't Lincoln tell them that they didn't have the power to free slaves, and to cease freeing slaves immediately?

When people are talking about Lincoln freed the slaves, I'm always like . Because we all know he didn't free the slaves because it was the right thing to do. It was mainly to cripple the South's economy. It helped the slaves but it wasn't done for any other reason.

That doesn't mean indiscriminate revisionism, especially of the kind that consistently downplays minorities of one kind or another, should be passively accepted. Representations in entertainment media can and does have an effect on social relations at large. Unless you're white, you should easily grasp the validity of the oft-repeated criticism of whitewashing, etc, in the film world.
