I was planning on using it for music recording as well as podcasting, but was looking for an answer on the music for vocals with a stand up stand.
Any insight there?
What use do use the cloud for?
The Shure SM7B is an incredibly power hungry mic. Most websites will already have bundles with cloud lifters already since the mic is often considered sub par in terms of gain without the additional +25 dB or clean gain the cloud lifters provides. All the cloud lifters does is give you an additional +25 dB without adding any noise to the signal. It’s very simple but an incredible value at $125 or so. Without a cloud lifter, you’ll have to max out your volume just to get a half decent level in your audio and at that point you’ll be introducing a lot of noise in your signal. You never want to max out your gain.
In terms of vocals...I heard that the SM7B is one of the mics Michael Jackson used on thriller so take that for what it’s worth.
In my opinion, this mic is better suited for podcasts. Right out the box it has a very strong broadcast radio sound to it. Voices sound incredible with the mic but you can tell it has a very broadcast tone characteristic as opposed to what you mic hear on a different condenser or tube mic. I track vocals with an avantone cv-12 and love it. It’s a very transparent mic with a ton of presence.
I run it through an Avalon 737 and a UA apollo x6 and a ua apollo x4.
