Anyone know why black church ushers wear white gloves?

I never understood the usage. I know some churches pass around those sliver plates during offerings but still doesn't explain the white gloves. Is it for just fashion?

I thought white symbolized purity. Like purple is royalty and a red tie is for power. But, I may be wrong.
