The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Beryl Satter. Dr. Satter is a professor of history at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and her research was recognized with a 2015 Guggenheim Grant. We’ll discuss her 2009 publication: Family Properties: Race, Real Estate and the Exploitation of Black Urban America. Ta-Nehisi Coates referenced this text in his landmark deconstruction of why black people should be granted immense compensation for the terrorism Whites have subjected us to. Satter provides a comprehensive, searing indictment of White real estate practices which confined Chicago’s black housing to horrendous areas with poor services and astronomical insurance rates. Black people were financially raped for the privilege living in squalor. The Federal Housing Administration refused to provide home loans for black people. So White predators sold shoddy housing to black people… and charged them double to quadruple the value of the property. We’ll see if Dr. Satter confirms N.D.B. Connolly’s andAndrew Kahrl’s statement that Whites have become increasingly efficient as confiscating black property.
