It's teams from different countries draft eligible boxers and then hold a yearly tournament.
The Cuba Domadors!
The World Series of Boxing is an AIBA organization formed in 2010 which allows fighters to maintain Olympic eligibility while competing in pro style bouts.
The boxers box 5 x 3 minute rounds, without headgear, using amateur gloves (10 oz. to 152 lbs., 12 oz. for heavier weights). (http://www.shopeverlast.com/usa-boxing-amateur-competition-fight-gloves.html)
These fighters are exposed to very stiff competition from the get-go. National teams are built by selecting top fighters from the amateur ranks. Unlike the typical pro route, WSB boxers immediately take on guys that would be similar to your typical 15-0 pro who has fought 4 and 6 rounders against club fighters. As such, it is hard to maintain a 0.
Here is the recent Cuba vs. USA match from April -
In my opinion, these fighters should be highly regarded despite 5-1, 6-2, 3-3 records. I think this shift from protecting the 0 from the start creates better match-ups for the fans. However, the league is still not well known.
In the future, I hope more top boxers will use the WSB to launch a successful pro career. I think the shift away from protecting fighters early in there career is good. But, the general public needs to become more educated about a loss not being a career ender. If fans embrace 8-2, 7-3 types as good boxers, not journeymen, then the sport of boxing will benefit greatly.
