Dutch movie, was weird as fukk. Received a lot of acclaim from film festivals, for what it's worth.

Gonna spoiler tag this next bit. Features potential spoilers about the movie.

I assume Borgman and his friends were demons, seems pretty obvious given the intro quote and the priests hunting him. Not sure where they were going with the tattoo/surgery bit though.

Over all a very bizarre movie.

Fred.

I was going to make a thread about this using the exact same title. Great flick, very psychological. Watched it last year and really enjoyed it. It was right around the time Occupy Wallstreet was happening and there is weird socio-economic, eat-the-rich type spin to it as well. This movie will stick around in your head for a long time after watching it. Subtitled, but highly recommended.

@TheGodling
Give us the scoop

I thought I wrote up a small piece way back when this came out over here but I couldn't find it.

It's an intriguing film for sure, almost all of its content is abstract symbolism, metaphors and parable without any straight answers (not really any crooked answers either). As such the movie has about as much meaning, and thus value, as you can forcibly draw from it. Regardless of its abstract content, Van Warmerdam is probably the best film maker we currently have and as such his movies are pretty much the best Dutch cinema you can find.

@hexagram23 Your analysis, short as it may be, is pretty much on point as far as it is generally considered. Although I like to include the implication:

Religious persecution historically (think medieval times) tends to target the weak and the poor to cast them out for the gain of the Church and the nobility, and that shines an interesting light on Borgman & co. invading the home of a well-off family, who all reveal themselves to be as easily caught up in acts of sin if ample opportunity is put in front of them.
