Thinking about getting Traktor and practice DJing. Does anybody have any experience with this. I see they keep dropping all types of controllers and I can't remember the last time I went to a club and saw a dj ACTUALLY dj.

Also how do you create a set or know what to play for 5 hour straight.

I cant speak on traktor but me personally i usually use vynil or serato, i cant speak on people who do pre-made sets, i wasnt brought up like that so i cant speak on that,

however, to create a set it should have direction and feeling, you should know your audience for one, if you are playing 5 hours it should definately vary, the problem is, for 5 hours you are gonna need 5 hours worth of material and somebody who is inexperienced should not be going on for that long.

longest ive gone on was for 3 hours and whats funny was by the time it was over i was still ready to go. it comes with experience, the more you dj the more you realize you run out of time faster and faster.

don't really DJ. i've tried basic mixing and scratching and it's fun as fukk but requires a lot of coordination and quickness. you gotta think fast.

if you've never DJed, i recommend getting an entry level controller first. you can practice basic mixing and scratching on that and it would cost you roughly 250/300dolalrs. that way you'll get a feel of if you like it or not without risking wasting thousands of dollars on turntables, mixer etc. if you already have experience DJing, disregard the last part. I tried both Traktor and Serato (both briefly) and honestly i find Serato more user friendly. seemed more intuitive.

don't know how true it is but i've often heard that Serato is more geared toward live performance while Traktor is more geared towards creation, production, recording.

EDIT: i had done a search on DJing and controller threads and left the tab opened only to come back to it later. just realized the thread was made in 2012

@Tom Foolery I dont use traktor or any controller for that matter, I prefer CDs or Vinyl

But when it comes to playing a set, you should either invest in or torrent a copy of "Mixed In Key", it will tell you the key of your songs and you can mix ur songs and comes with a wheel like the one below

The wheel works like this....

You can mix two songs which are the same key, e.g. 12B with 12B

Or within one key either higher or lower, e.g. 12B with 11B or 12B with 1B

Mixing your sets in key will obviously sound better as the keys of songs wont clash and sound horrible, plus if you work your way around the wheel in a clockwise direction, it will give the listeners a sense of euphoria that they dont realise why - e.g. starting at 12B and working gradually all the way around back to 12B
