So I've made a few gains over the years (meager, but still noticeable), and this dude I go to school with asks me for my advice on how I gained size, and he tells me that he wants to get bigger and stronger. I generally don't like giving advice, because I don't want to live up to the arrogant meathead stereotype or anything else the comes with it.
He came at me asking how I did it, so I'm thinking dude is serious, so I go in and explain that he's gonna need to hit the gym hard, and up his calorie intake...in general I explain to him that it's gonna be a lot of hard work, and I don't do it condescendingly. I tell him flat out, like it's just the reality of the situation.
He tells me he doesn't want to lift weights because he's heard about how it's "bad for your joints and the risk of injury". I explain to him that he doesn't have to start off as he-man, and that he should lift within his means at first, and then progressively overload. He seems to have his mind made up before he even talked to me, and I guess just wanted to hear himself talk, so he tells me that he just "wants to use what he has at hom", I ask him what he has and he says, "I have a pull-up bar", and I tell him that he can start off with calisthenics like pull-ups and push-ups, etc. but eventually he'll have to lift weights if he wants to get bigger and stronger. Eventually, I get to the point where I realize dude isn't having it, so I tell him, "do what you want to do man, you seem to have it figured out...don't know why you bothered asking me if all you're going to do is make excuses, argue with me and tell me how you were going to go about it anyway."
So then dude then tells me after asking me (can't stress that enough) "nevermind, man, I'm good...I didn't hear what I wanted".
