you get one of those threatening letters in your e-mail that your ISP acts like a middle man and delivers for you?

usually its off Bittorrent. they get a swarm's IP addresses and mass mail the ISPs asking them to deliver letters to the IP address' account holder. sometimes the letter has a link that forwards you to a site that claims if you pay them a small to medium sized fee in x amount of days they promise not to pursue your case.

at that point they don't even know who you are cause the ISP is playing the middle man. i just got one of these in my e-mail. they want $200 or else they're threatening to sue which i already know they're not gonna sue me as an individual but still.

Im not the police and no ones watching you. Please refrain so you dont get any more letters. Your internet service may become throttled into oblivion.

Well anyways i guess this is the new debt collector's type scam where debt collectors call you and try to shake you down for money except now its these guys.

these letters come from a third party company that only exist to scare people into paying them money which they share with the rights holder. i've also heard some of them upload the files themselves then monitor IP addresses for the specific reason of targeting people.

besides getting an account holder's IP address from an ISP this firm also has to prove you were the one that downloaded it. taking these cases to court typically is too expensive but if you scare a poor sap you were never gonna sue in the first place into paying you money with just the threat well that's all good to you.

this is a case where i didn't actually do it. somebody downloaded some porn using my connection and i get the random letter in my email about it.

bad part is i could have directed the person to better places to download porn with no risk like say Boxden if they would have asked me.

i don't really wanna bother securing my WiFi but i guess i'm left with no choice cause this could have been some kiddie porn or some jailable shyt.

If your local wireless network is insecure you may have a loophole there. Just make sure you do something "dumb" like unplug and replug the router every day so whatever records you have of connected PCs are lost.

EDIT: Oh, nvm, it really was someone else. Just lock up your wireless and you're ok.

I think its kinda funny. they actually sent my ISP a cease and desist letter to send to me and on the letter they've added this whole thing about please settle with us before we're forced to get your contact info in court. and put a link on there to a shady website that's supposed to collect payments.

i'm willing to bet if you did try to pay on there the payment wouldn't process and then they'd have your contact info and a credit card and send you letters to your physical address asking for more money before they sue you.

What's the benefit of unsecured WiFi except not having to put in a password once in awhile?

If your router supports it at least use range or transmission range, but then again its still MUCH easier to use a password....

Why would u leave your internet unsecured only to come home one day to find out you no longer exist?
