After being out of school for three years I decided I want to go back to become a math teacher. Weekends and summers off FTW!

I'm in NYC so I figure I'll have plenty of options at taking night classes or online courses because I work 40+ at my current job. When I left school I was close to getting my degree in management smh. So I might just finish that degreeand then get my masters in math education. Is this possible? I've wasted so much time smh.

Also whats it like being a teacher? I love the kids!

I know 3 teachers in the NYC system, 1 teaches kindergarten, the other high school, and the other teaches special ed.

I don't think you can be a teacher any time soon with taking night classes and weekend. You need to have a master degree at the very least. Also you can try NYC Teaching fellowship where the city sponsors part of your education. From what I can tell, teaching sucks.

I'm sure the politics involved in the NYC school system sucks. Actually there's a bunch of negetive aspects but doesn't having summers off make up for that?

depends on how well you can deal with stress, so much bullshyt goes on during those months its ridiculous.

I know this because my mom and sister are both teachers So I have been around that shyt all my life. Especially now with budget cuts and all sorts of bullshyt? I would recommend getting a masters at the minimum and teach somewhere upstate. More pay + less bullshyt

QUEENS NY
My girl just graduated with her Masters in Special ED. But right now it's nearly impossible to get a job in NYC and Long Island. The way the economy is no one is retiring. I think the City has a hiring freeze on teachers right now and you're not getting a job on LI unless you know someone and even then it's questionable. My girl lucked out and got a job at a special preschool so she can at least pay her bills right now. But in NY district jobs are nearly impossible to come by right now.

Get your degree. It's going to be good, in the long run.

My mom retired as a teacher 3 years ago and my sister was a teacher here in nyc for 15 years before she moved downsouth.

Theres been alot of changes and restrictions on the control teachers have over the curriculum, style of teaching etc. My moms and sister both left hating it because of this.

Its a job yes but get your masters cause if not itll be hard to get a job and the pay will be significantly less.
