So I recently started reading the LOTR books, still on book one, and I have some questions/comments. I am somewhat new to Middle Earth, having seen the movies but never getting deep into the mythology of the world.

1. It is one confusing world to try and make sense of. Tolkien does so much name dropping of random places and people, how am I supposed to know any of this? It seems like i should have researched before reading, for the books don't explain much. Even the maps in the book are confusing and incomplete. I want one big map showing the path Frodo took from the shire all the way to Mt. Doom!

2. The poems/songs. Good God. I don't understand a word of them, and they are literally in every chapter. Way too much for my taste.

3. Tolkien doesn't do the best job painting a visual of the journey IMO. If i hadn't seen the movies i wouldn't be able to picture some of these places.

So far I am loving book one. It's a fascinating world Tolkien created. The movies really did leave out alot, understandably for time constraints. Do you guys feel like Peter Jackson should have included Tom Bambadil? He is pretty important in the book, although kind of corny and annoying with his singing.

The Wrong Side of the Tracks
1. The names get repeated a lot so you'll recognize them. If you need a better map to get an idea of where everything is, go here:

2. Tolkien invented full languages for each race. If you don't understand the words, don't worry, you're not supposed to.

3. Stop watching TV and you'll be better able to visualize what he's writing. Remember, The Hobbit was written in 1937 and Lord of the Rings was supposed to be a sequel that was interrupted by World War II.
