I started the motions for something like that in Newark...but because of some personal setbacks I had to put a hold on it
Also Newark is a funny place... I started talking about that with a few guys after moving there 2 years....those guys were looking at me like I was from another planet
I mean I worked as a teaching artist in new york city for many years at a few non-profits
I got into real estate and still wanted to reach out to the Newark area...but again got very funny looks from my own people
Anyway I presented the 501c3 idea and how to get funding
Since there was so much paperwork to be filed and everything would have to be legit those guys got scared away
Those guys wanted to work under the table without paying taxes or have insurance
cause that's really what you need to have a non-profit of that type
1. 501c 3 status( with by laws and board)
2.Tax TIN
3. Insurance
4. License to solicit funding/grants from state and or fedz
*Bonus- Lawyer, accountant
I started the process but had to put things on hold...its not difficult-should take about a year or less to start after doing all the paper work
but again working with folks in the community sometimes can be weird
Hopefully that helps
