Young Black Directors I look to for inspiration:

Ryan Coogler - Ridiculous that he got a $200MM film on his third feature

Steven Caple Jr. - solid feature released a few months back "The Land"

Matthew Cherry - "9 Rides"

Barry Jenkins - Winning awards with his second feature "Moonlight"

Qasim Basir - Known for "Mooslum" and his latest film "Destined" with Cory Hardrict

Sheldon Candis - "Luv" starring Common in 2012

Hoping and planning to be on this level myself by the end of next year...

Just like any position in the film industry it comes down to who you know (having the right connections to send work to and have your script optioned/picked up) and having the ability to write an innovative and technically sound screenplay.

Your best bet is to try and submit to major screenplay competitions and get in screenwriters labs, where a lot of up and coming talent is found (Cooglers Fruitvale Station script was selected for the Sundance Labs in 2012 and the finished film debuted at Sundance the next year)

Matthew Cherry and Geno Brooks are two on the rise writer/directors

Matthew Cherry is responsible for the EXCELLENT short lived web series Almost 30, and a couple of indie dramas. I think he'll be one of the black male directors who blows up similar to Ryan Coogler in the next few years...

Geno Brooks is a fukking genius. Dude has his OWN subscription based web channel (similar to Black & Sexy) where he writes/directs/and produces his own shows. All of them starring a predominantly black cast. Check out the site
