2010 was the first year I started writing verses, I was consistent through out that entire year. Not only did it help me get through rough times, but it was lots of fun. Early 2011 I was about half way done with writing lyrics to Illmatic...I recorded some of the tracks on my phone, but no official recordings were done. Then from left field...boom...Fashawn drops his "Ode to Illmatic"...Elzhi drops "Elmatic" the same year!
Pretty much lost the fire in me to finish :yeshrug:Trying to do a project for Illmatic was farrr too early for me anyway.

I definitely have a deep passion for poetry, lyrics, wordplay, etc. I would like to drop an EP, four or five songs max. I'd show it to friends and family, probably drop it here, facebook, etc, but at the end of the day its mainly for ME. Still, I want to be completely proud of my work before its shown to anyone, so I MUST get better.

I have several notebooks and phone memos with rhymes, only some i'm completely happy about. Sometimes I think too much when writing and get discouraged when I compare it to other artists...that's when the writers block kicks in...I think I haven't written anything new now for almost a year now. Mind you, I'm in LOVE with Hip hop, at least its essence...but I have ZERO background on poetry/writing/rhyming, I have no favorites, patterns, structure, etc, so i'm not exactly sure how to start/how to begin taking it more serious. I realize I have to do my homework on this, but I was wondering what people in the coli would say before I searched anywhere else.

I'm almost positive i'm going to pick up a creative writing course next semester, along with this MIDI music course that pretty much introduces you on how to make beats. I'm still skeptical about it...I don't know if that would really HELP me, you know? Any coli emcees have some advice?? Thanks in advance.

Whenever you want to do something ask "Why?" and why is that? That's so you can find your purpose. Sure a lot of people want money. But then they get money and they still feel unhappy. Not saying it's the same for you but basically whatever it is you want to do ask why? Why do I want to rhyme? Because I enjoy It? Why Do I Enjoy It? Because It moves me in a way nothing else does? Why does it do that? Because I feel I have a voice where I've never had a voice before. Why is that? Because I feel I can help people through my lyrics? Why is that? because someone told me my lyrics have helped them in the past and I want to get that feeling everyday of my life. As you can see that simple question causes you to ask multiple questions and when you sort that out you will have your inspiration and your purpose.

don't take that midi class breh, you're better off just throw shyt at a wall and seeing what sticks...my beats from jsut a year ago to today sound worlds different and its just finding your style and discarding the fluff.

Keep practicing and try to stop judging yourself too much. If it's something that makes you feel good and you're passionate about it just do it repeatedly.

What are you asking? How to get good at emceeing? Well you gotta write everyday..the more you write the better you get..and freestyle everyday also, so you can learn how to play around with ya flows..write to different sounding beats also..you said you haven't wrote in a year..wow..I mean everyone has their natural style..and we all bite, by taking bits and pieces off rappers that we listen to unconsciously..just listen to a wide variety of rappers..I dunno..I grew up writing and freestyling over actual songs cuz I didn't have instrumentals till like 4 years ago..you don't need to take a writing course..what ever you see or hear or experiance in real life you can take that in and use it..everything you've known ya whole life is a writing course itself..

you are your best and worst enemy,

take aspects from not just rappers but comedians , politicians etc..

being able to change/adjust on the fly opens up so much more potential

You have all your own answers. You have all your best lyrics and you don't need to take any kind of class to produce them. Even creative writing. All they want to show you is how to think in "that" way when "that" way isn't your way and subconsciously you know this.

My best advice would be to only listen to you. You love that shyt then keep loving it. You not writing anything in over a year shows me that you don't want to love it right now. Maybe you want to feel sorry for yourself because you feel safe there. This world is full of people who don't know what they want. Why would you listen to any of them over yourself? Why would you let any of them change your opinion on what you want to do.

Write something. If you do it's because you want to. Keep it up. If you don't it's because you don't want to. In that case don't complain. But make a choice.
