Spikes: The metal studs on Southwark Bridge Road
Metal spikes designed to stop homeless people sheltering in doorways have caused outrage, after photographs of a London building went viral.

The property, a building of flats on Southwark Bridge Road, has a series of at least 17 inch-long metal studs embedded in the floor of an alcove next to the doorway.

The photographs were posted on Facebook last night, before being posted on Twitter, where they have been shared thousands of times.

The pictures upset a lot of people, with many comparing them to spikes used to stop pigeons landing on buildings.

Although the anger of the internet was newly directed at these cruel devices, anti-homeless spikes are not new additions to our streets.

They've been in use for more than a decade, particularly on older, more ornate buildings where wide windowsills and ledges can seem like a relatively comfortable place to sleep.

Katharine Sacks-Jones, head of policy and campaigns at homelessness charity Crisis, said: "It is a scandal that anyone should sleep on the streets in 21st century Britain. Yet over the last three years rough sleeping has risen steeply across the country and by a massive 75% in London.

"Behind these numbers are real people struggling with a lack of housing, cuts to benefits and cuts to homelessness services to help them rebuild their lives.

"They might have suffered a relationship breakdown, a bereavement or domestic abuse. They deserve better than to be moved on to the next doorway along the street. We will never tackle rough sleeping with studs in the pavement. Instead we must deal with the causes."

Need to do more for the mental health and well-being of those that are homeless but at the same time if I owned or worked at that building, I wouldn't want the homeless sleeping outside.

out of sight out of mind. are they mad at the spikes or are they mad at the fact that they are forced to realize the cruelty or their society? that it had been put into plain view for them?

the cause is endemic to the system. which they would know if they hadnt been happily ignoring how grim things really and truly are in our world.

The money could've been put towards a homeless shelter. That's kinda odd to use harm to ward off homeless people. what if someone trips and falls onto those spikes? lawsuit

I just watched the Underworld series this weekend...

Homeless people who have lost their homes but were "good" citizens before should start a covenant underground and take back what's theirs :demonic:

not to be "that guy" but wheelchair users ain’t starved for places to sit down

[Quoted tweet]
this is not pro-disabled.
this is anti-homeless architecture disguised as disabled accommodation.
do not be fooled.

@tylerduran21
this reminds me of this one video where these ppl were designing this bench you’d have to pay to sit on and once your time is up, spikes would pop up from the seat. anti homelessness is wild

@ParadoxVirtual
Not to be "That other guy" but wheel chairs have a back rest for the most of them..

8/34
@UTDMaI
also a lot of people in wheelchairs carry extra stuff on the back of their wheelchairs so it’d just be weird having the back of their wheelchair against something like what

9/34
@relativeread
they got mobile chair

10/34
@cgtwtz
Well u gotta give them something atleast 💁🏻‍♂️

11/34

@ayo30bg
This is funny

14/34
@DixonBeats
The wheel chair could go either side of the other two seats too? With no change to a normal bench…

15/34
@blackboyrizzy
This is funny

16/34
@DanielRaz_Fit
That's true.

17/34
@adrizia4u
First opinion is real

18/34
@onlinenow99
They don't need either a backrest or additional support for their backs.

19/34
@georgecursor
Quite the opposite actually

20/34
@jeditrinupab
That's a good point.

21/34
@deNutrients
In Washington DC there is a famous sculpture of Jesus as a homeless person asleep on a park bench.
It is the only normal park bench left there, roughly.

22/34
@michael_kove
This is what internet is outraged about today?

23/34
@tikli_____
Funny one

24/34
@melorajayne
Omg this is funny 😂

28/34
@Brent9716
It's a place for them to stand for a while.

29/34
@MoistValgina
Is this a real bench??

30/34
@AirtagEyeon
Why not just bolt two chairs to the ground... this a AI bench right ... it gotta be lol

31/34
@the_robertdavis
How it really works

GWPKO-uWcAA79t9.jpg

32/34
@JulietsLurking
Oh no. A hypothetical homeless person can’t lay down.

33/34
@mraarone
I’m in a wheelchair when I’m getting around in public. The trick is, you pull to the side of who you want to sit next to. This is just value signaling. There’s no substance here.

34/34
@steve_eggson
Is that a standing area for the person in the wheels chair?

Theres plenty of other places for homeless people to sleep. We acknowledge many of them have mental illness. Well,outside of an apartment building isnt the best place for you to sleep. As someone who dealt with my share of crazy homeless people when i was using the bus. Last thing i want to do is have to rough up a homeless person infront of my woman and child. On those buses i was unmoved by them yelling out random shyt,and dramatic convulsions. But when youe in papa bear mode,all bets are off. Those spikes will feel like acupuncture compared to the hands and feet i would be forced to put you down with:respect:

this country has moved past these candyland progressives who think they can shame people over this emotional nonsense

if you don't want to;

-wear a useless paper mask
-be carjacked
-invite illegal immigration
-step over some homeless man to get into your apartment that you pay 2k for
-see a man's dikk in a women's locker room

that's OK. none of this makes you a bad person :mjlol:

who made the rule that voting Democrat comes with the obligation to defend this garbage? i don't remember being asked :childplease:
