The low level jobs you are thinking of are in hospitality.
I didn’t say the jobs were well paying and companies use them to businesses wages.

My point is there is an economic reason people don’t want undocumented people. It’s not what they say about the government giving them “support,” but that there are second jobs people may want to get to make ends meet but can’t.

For me, I’d punish the businesses over the uncounted people and set up a clear pathway to documented status so that all workers aren’t punished for working.

If they can't get a level of job to beat out the kind of opportunity an illegal immigrant gets their lives went wrong somewhere. We're talking about people who in many cases can't even speak the language needed for good opportunities to come their way let alone lacking the education to get them. Their entire value is being an able to do what amount to brainless grunt work. Just being born in the United States puts you way ahead of them for available chances.

Born and raised in the United States they can't use that advantage to beat out someone who had to sneak into the country likely can't speak the language and has no valuable education.

I guess at that point yeah it's easier to demonize some "other" than it is to ask why can't I do better?

This isn't the society boomers came up in. It's not just default walk into a factory knowing nothing but being able-bodied and you're handed a well paying job at a living wage. Homeowners don't want affordable housing so we don't build enough to create artificial scarcity and make people compete to raise value on existing homes.
