I havent seen him play extensively but he was a great scorer and very athletic wing. One of the first wings to really use his athletic ability to attack from the perimeter. Still he wasn't THAT good. He might have been MJ's influence but there were way better players around like Gervin and DrJ for example

David Thompson could put up some points. Me and dude at work were talking bout him a couple weeks ago.
As for why he wasn't talked about its a lot of players who are forgotten. And I don't think he was ever a top 5 player during his time.

David Thompson and Walter Davis were MJ's primary idols and guys he patterned his early game after.

He looked up to Julius Erving too.

he isnt really talked about because he was a cocaine addict.

If I am not mistaken MJ said this during his HOF induction speech.

As far as why you don't hear more about him that is very simple...he played before 1979 and his name is not Kareem, Russell, Wilt, Willis Reed, Dr. J, Gervin, Big O, or West.

:leon: didn't know that
he talked about in ACC country because he was incredible for NC State, but he is mostly seen as a drug addict. I think dude got suspended from the league a few times because of his problems.

His drug issues is what derailed his career.

edit: actually he blew his knee out at Studio 54 while high on cocaine.

David Thompson was one of the FIRST athletic above the rim players (along with with Julius Erving) dude could leap out the building. He and Dr. j engaged in the FIRST Slam Dunk Contest during half time of the ABA All Star Game. David Thompson, in that contest performed one of the first recorded instances of the 360 while DR.J took off from the free throw line. After the ABA-NBA merger he was with the Denver Nuggets, on the last day of the Season in 1978 he recorded 73 points (barely losing the scoring title to George Gervin, who scored 63 later that night) he signed a record (at the time) $4 Million deal with Seatle but substance abuse and an injury to his legs (after a fall at studio 54) les to his demise
