It’s a case of “back by popular demand” for the film “Garifuna in Peril,” which must have a sizable number of advance tickets sales to ensure its Manhattan screenings will be held next month.
The Ali Allie and Ruben Reyes film — about Garifuna culture and a teacher’s efforts to maintain his people’s history by opening a language school — is scheduled for a screening on Oct. 2, at the AMC Loews 19th S treet East 6, 890 Broadway (at E. 19th St.) in Manhattan, at 7 p.m.
But advance ticket sales by Sept. 25 will determine whether the film is shown and if a planned prescreeing recognition event is held, said Teofilo Campeon, who’s promoting the event.
“As of now, 91 more people need to RSVP/buy tickets by Wednesday, Sept. 25, so that the Wednesday, Oct. 2, screening can be confirmed,” he said late last week.
“It’s been a considerable challenge trying to get this screening together,” said Campeon, explaining that the theatrical screening company working on the Manhattan showing requires a sizable number of people to show interest in the film by purchasing advance tickets at least one week before the show.
The tickets, which are $14, will be sold in advance only.
The film — which is headed for showings at film festivals in Colombia and Venice, Italy, later this month — centers around Garifuna peoples, their Caribbean origins and their steadfast determination to hold onto their culture. Descended from enslaved West Africans on St. Vincent in the Caribbean and Indians from the Carib and Arawak tribes, the Garifuna were exiled to Central America by British in the 1700s. Living today in Central American nations such as Honduras and Belize, and in major cities such as New York and Los Angeles, the Garifuna proudly maintain their centuries-old culture, language and music.
Campeon said the prescreening event will honor young, influential Garifuna such as undefeated junior middleweight boxer Eddie Gomez (representing Honduras), punta rock singer Lil June (representing Honduras and Belize), DJ and Internet radio personality DJ Primetime (representing Guatemala), 2013 Miss Garifuna Yanira Flores (representing Honduras), and Francesca Chaney (representing Belize), actress, singer and founder of G.A.I.N., a nonprofit organization empowering teenage girls.

And all the other tri-state posters I would greatly appreciate you guys either copping tickets or spreading the word. There aren't a great deal of documentaries/films created by local Black folks...especially about Black latin-americans and it would be a shame for this showing to be canceled. Again, I would greatly appreciate your support in helping this event go down.
