Skip Gates did a series on PBS years ago highlighting some of the issues we face in the 21st century dealing with race. The color line is prevalent in this country and the divisions between the races are becoming more and more evident...shyt, especially what we're going through with these racist cops and the racists that defend and protect them.
But we can see that same degree of drooling, slack-jawed, dimwitted racism...in Hollywood. But there is a different element to Hollywood's racism that makes it unique to your run of the mill a$$hole at the bank...the racism in Hollywood is...uniquely American. Why do I say that? We are a market culture...whatever people have a taste for, good or bad, there will always be someone there to provide it. Everyone understands this element to our society. In America you can get stoopid rich this way. Hollywood does.
In that PBS series, Skip Gates interviewed some Hollywood producer and he admitted that casting a Black male or female lead in a movie decreases profits. Two white folk, m & f, is optimal...the worst obviously is two Black folk. He could cast white man/black woman and cash out more than Black man/white woman...all of this is market-based...what people will go see.
The answer to the issues we face when we see the innate racism of Sony execs making jokes about the POTUS, or the lack of Black performers in TV or movies...is what we already know it to be: The basement level racism that dominates the minds and hearts of millions of people in this country.
Hollywood does not care about your self-image. They do not care about you being able to see positive images of yourself. They do not care about telling accurate stories about our people......they care about $$$$. Just like the rest of the power structure in this country.
