President Trump is so eager to complete hundreds of miles of border fence ahead of the 2020 presidential election that he has directed aides to fast-track billions of dollars’ worth of construction contracts, aggressively seize private land and disregard environmental rules, according to current and former officials involved with the project.

He also has told worried subordinates that he will pardon them of any potential wrongdoing should they have to break laws to get the barriers built quickly, those officials said.

Trump has repeatedly promised to complete 500 miles of fencing by the time voters go to the polls in November 2020, stirring chants of “Finish the Wall!” at his political rallies as he pushes for tighter border controls. But the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has completed just about 60 miles of “replacement” barrier during the first 2½ years of Trump’s presidency, all of it in areas that previously had border infrastructure.

The president has told senior aides that a failure to deliver on the signature promise of his 2016 campaign would be a letdown to his supporters and an embarrassing defeat. With the election 14 months away and hundreds of miles of fencing plans still in blueprint form, Trump has held regular meetings at the White House to receive progress updates and hasten the pace, according to several people involved in the discussions.

When aides have suggested that some of his orders are illegal or unworkable, Trump has suggested he would pardon the officials if they would just go ahead, aides said. He has waved off worries about contracting procedures and the use of eminent domain, saying “take the land,” according to officials present at the meetings.

Don’t worry, I’ll pardon you,” he has told officials in meetings about the wall.

“He said people expected him to build a wall, and it had to be done by the election,” one former official said.

Asked for comment, a White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the president is joking when he makes such statements about pardons.

Hogan Gidley, a deputy White House press secretary, said Tuesday that the president is protecting the country with the addition of new border barriers.

“Donald Trump promised to secure our border with sane, rational immigration policies to make American communities safer, and that’s happening everywhere the wall is being built,” Gidley said. He noted that internal criticisms of the president “are just more fabrications by people who hate the fact the status quo, that has crippled this country for decades, is finally changing as President Trump is moving quicker than anyone in history to build the wall, secure the border and enact the very immigration policies the American people voted for.”

“President Trump is fighting aggressively for the American people where other leaders in the past have rolled over, sold out, and done absolutely nothing,” Gidley said.

Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper is expected to approve a White House request to divert $3.6 billion in Pentagon funds to the barrier project in coming weeks, money that Trump sought after lawmakers refused to allocate $5 billion. The funds will be pulled from Defense Department projects in 26 states, according to administration officials who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the matter.

Not a middle class tax cut at the expense (finally) of unprecedented corporate power? Not strengthening existing social safety nets, if not an all out modern day "New Deal" to stimulate the middle class? Not investing in a new, modern energy plan that can both create new jobs and combat climate change? Not taking on the student loan crisis?

No, blowing even more of our tax dollars for a fukking Trump monument just to satisfy your hatred of immigrants is good use of our tax dollars right now. It could be another full year before a recession hits, but with you passive Trump supporters and your bright ideas we'll have black folks homeless and sitting in soup lines by the end of the year. And I bet you'll blame illegal immigrants for that too.

Trump would rather be around working undocumented Mexican immigrants at his own resorts than be around "infested" black cities.

This is a DISTRACTION from a weak economy, a failing agenda, tons of bad headlines, and Trump slowly realizing that he is losing control of his Presidency. He is losing control of the trade war, of the economy, of the whole North Korea peace talks, of Congress, of his own popularity (he cannot find a single poll that puts him ahead of a hypothetical Joe Biden nominee), even his cult-like favorability among Republican voters is slipping (finally below 90% last I heard). He is losing control of everything and running out of stunts to pull.

Illegal immigrants was always a reliable distraction to keep weak-minded bigots focused on a powerless scapegoat while he digs in our pockets passing tax cuts for himself, slashing civil rights laws and protections, slashing social programs, lieing about how great everything is, manipulating the markets and job numbers to hide the damage, and exploiting the middle class every bit as intentionally as people want to believe illegal immigrants do.

It’s not the fault of those being “outcompeted” that businesses choose to hire illegal labor. The median wealth of black people in Boston is $8. No, that’s not a typo. The unemployment among black people in Boston is among the nation’s highest. Is it because able bodied black people in Boston don’t want to work? Or, it is due to other, systemic factors?
