It's not so much the tradition, because the Black population that stems from the same theological tradition doesn't engage in these same levels of clownery, though there are certainly problems there. It's more political/sociological, imo, and has to do with lack of education and insularity.

There's something about black practice too that -- this is just a cultural prejudice, of course -- I look at people shaking dancing crying and whatever else that just has me :mindblown: that it's a religious ritual. When I look at that Peter Popoff thing actually the physicality of the actions is what really confuses me, the shaking, the falling back when he touches you etc and reading the Pentecostalism article about the holy ghost filling you and the like helps me understand what's going on there..

That stuff dates back to the 1700s and the emergence of American theology as a distinct region of Christian thinking. As far as the Black Church goes, an element of the ecstatic/trance-oriented religious practice remains in them from the pre-Christian history of West African religions. The same is true for the syncretic Black religions of the Americas, like Voodoo, modern Yoruba, Santeria and so on.

Friend, why do you have such a hard on for Christianity? What is your major malfunction? First you copied my own Jesus quotes thread with your own on The Emporer of Rome. And now this.

Don't you know that the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

I copied what? :ohhh: I posted that independently

not sure what you mean by "now this." I've been thinking about this for a while I'd have posted it eventually. There's something about US christian history and practice that's pretty different from european protestants and world catholics etc. Why isn't that a worthwhile thing to discuss?

Vodun or Vudun is the name of the original West African religion. In Haiti it's called Voudou or Voodoo and less commonly Voudon, and in Louisiana it is called Voodoo as well.
