Just watched it with my wife last night. I’m of 2 minds about the movie. One one hand it’s a really good rom com and it’s funny as fukk. I love Ali Wong’s comedy specials and this movie had that same kind of humor. Movie was legit hilarious.

Something that I noticed stopped me from fully enjoying the movie. 99% of the music in it was Hiphop but there weren’t any black people in it. Her friend had that “mixed” vibe but who the fukk knows? There was also the celeb impersonator towards the end but they were a non-character. And I only saw 1 black guy chillin in the background of course during the entire movie.

For real if this movie had a M Night Shalaman twist at the end and was revealed that the characters lived in an alternate universe where black men were wiped out or transcended into higher beings, I wouldn’t be surprised. If it was a movie that didn’t have so much Hiphop influence I would still have an issue but with this movie it feels hi-key disrespectful.

The lack of black people didn’t really get my attention because it was in San Fran specifically.

Also their mixed black friend was a lesbian right? Plus they knew her since kids?

I grew up in a white area so the few blacks girls who went to school with me acted just like that mixed girl.

Insignificant posting from an insignificant poster

Ive never seen a wu tang clan video where there was an asian guy in the background while they were rapping.

So based on ur logic, in order for them to have not "hi key disrespected" black folk... They should have least got a token brotha a role in the film cuz the light bright yella lesbian wasnt sufficient enough. Got it.

Im glad we arent acquainted in real life.

This faux coli militant-ism really gets trite after the first five years. Guess its here for the long haul.

As an asian breh whos been on sohh since 2002.... This ranks amongst the dumbest and callow comments ive ever come across.

Unlike the movie tho, i two of my closest friends are brothas. Were tight because were good people with similar interests ...

Like the movie tho, i grew up strictly on hip hop becuz living in south seattle's projects in the 80's-90's... Its all you heard at bbqs, parties and every car that drove down the block.

What you fail to understand that hip hop/rap is universal and loved by all. But in 2019, internet folk still want to put a color to how its represented, even when done tastefully.

I really hope ur woman is more mindful than u are of good music being applied to a movie score becuz its sonically captivating and nostalgic... And by having 93 til infinity incorporated in flick based on the bay... God forbid they best cast at least one black supporting cast member for the sake of feeling authentic.

Next time i go eat pizza, ima tell the owner i dont feel comfortable dining at the restaurant cuz there isnt any italian patronage in sight.

Watched this with my girl, it was funny as fukk.

I hate romantic shyt, but only watched because of her, but I surprisingly like it.

Netflix fukked up by
putting Keanu Reeves in the trailer, what the fukk were they thinking with that? It ruined the surpise, he was funny as hell, he really needs to do more comedy

I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings breh. Here’s my response:

1. If Wu-Tang knew that there were Asians in the Hiphop community that could be incorporated into their performances in an non stereotypical way, then they should’ve put them on. Your analogy would be more apt if the Wu appropriated Asian culture but only featured Asian women in their videos. You wouldn’t have a problem with that as an Asian man???

2. On your token comment, yes there should’ve been some more black faces in the movie. I get that It’s an Asian American story and I’m happy for it. I admit ted that I enjoyed the movie but the lack of black faces WITH the soundtrack was jarring to me. How did you or your black friends feel about it? Keep in mind I didn’t say that they had to be main characters or tier 1 side characters but there were virtually no black people. And to address your comment about the seemingly mixed “friend” character being black - stop it. You don’t get to tell me how to feel about the representation of my own people on any screen be it tv or movies. So stop that shyt.

3. My post wasn’t a shot at your upbringing or love for Hiphop so I don’t even know where you got that from. I didn’t question anyone’s love for the music. In fact Ali Wong’s love of it is evident based off of this movie, Fresh off the Boat, and her 2 Netflix specials that I saw. That’s what made the absence of black people jarring in this movie for me AS A BLACk MAN. So how can you reference my “failure” to understand anything?

You might not agree with my opinions but you don’t get to just call me “dumb” because I’m not and honestly I don’t care how long you’ve been on Sohh or any other sight. Matter of fact you could be the sole survivor of the Allhiphop boards who was put in a rocket and blasted off here to save your azz on some Superman shyt and I wouldn’t care.

Also, your fake Coli militant comment was just an ad hominem attack. You got that based off of 1 post? Moreover, maybe being “militant” is just a mindstate that you don’t understand? You should ask your 2 black friends about it.

Honestly, if you aren’t bothered by the lack of blacks in the movie even though it leans heavily on black culture for its “vibe” because as an Asian you’re used to being persona non grata in entertainment or feel like this movie is such an accomplishment that you don’t want it sullied by me and my opinions then that’s on you but you aren’t going to shame me into not feeling some type of way about it.
