Godzilla got busy.
For those unfamiliar, Alan Aragon is one of the most highly sought after nutrition researchers/educators/trainers whose work is held in high regard. His online fame escalated throughout the 2000s and is a big reason IIFYM was popularized.
Seems he had another meaning to IIFYM.
In case reddit link acts up:
Looks like he deleted his Twitter and the Facebook posts regarding this incident. Someone mentioned Bodybuilding.com removed his mod privileges. After checking, they actually banned him.
Let's see where this goes.
Seems he had another meaning to IIFYM.
In case reddit link acts up:
Alan Aragon turns out to be a serial sexual harasser.
I was very surprised by how many influential people in fitness said this is not OK:
Alan Aragon posted that he had a problem with alcoholism. He was called out and it turned out he had been kicked out of a conference for repeatedly harassing multiple women (and that he had done it before).
Most telling? He went for the 'I'm an alcoholic' post before any kind of apology (and only did an extremely whiny one after it was publicly revealed what he had done).
He eventually deleted his account, and most of his peers have repudiated what he did and how he acted.
- So 2 days ago, Alan Aragon posts about how he has battled alcoholism and has decided to swear it off.
- The first few hundred comments are all about how brave and amazing he is. And then this.
- Uhoh - sexual harasser? He kind of admits to it, but then also says he isn't offering anyone an apology. Turns out, months ago, Carolina had accused him of sexual harassment, and after his "I love alcohol too much" she went after him.
- Then another woman had mentioned sexual harassment at a conference Alan had been at (note the keyword 'had' - we'll come back to that):
- Rumours started swirling that Alan was kicked out of the conference because of what he had done on alcohol. After the alcohol post, Yvette revealed it was actually him who had done it.
- And then it was confirmed by the organizer that not only had Alan Aragon harassed Yvette, but two other ladies too:
- Yvette comments about what he did.
- Now the heat is on... Alan then posts a 'my bad' post. Note the usage of weasel words - "felt wronged' and that he needs 'gender sensitivity education.' He also never mentions the other two women he harassed (just the company they work for)
- Going back to Carolina's post - instead of issuing any words of contrition, Alan just links to his post and says 'please read this'
- The organizer pipes in again, saying that when he first confronted Alan, his response was "what if she made it up bro?"
- At one point, some guy commented that if Alan was an attractive white guy, it wouldn't have been sexual harassment. Yvette writes some bizarre bit on how he is hot, and Alan makes his one and only comment in the entire thread
- Turns out Alan had called everyone who Carolina had mentioned to and said she was a groupie/fangirl and was just bitter.
- And uhoh, yet another one comes out.
- Turns out while he was publicly saying sorry, Alan felt zero remorse.
- And one last weak apology. Note that he makes it about himself, only mentions Yvette, and makes no reference to any of the other ladies (including Carolina, who he had gaslit).
- Turns out he harassed Susan Kleiner, who he repeatedly called his "mentor"
- The smartest move - he deleted his account. Nope he's still kicking around. Hopefully second time's the charm - deleted again.
- And another women says this was a pattern
I was very surprised by how many influential people in fitness said this is not OK:
- Greg Nuckols (he was the first, and did a follow up on supporting the people who speak out)
- Chris Burgess
- Josh Hillis
- Leigh Peele
- Benjamin Tormey
- Masa'il
- David Dellanave
- Molly Galbraith
- James Fell
- Eric Helms
- Lou Schuler
- Nick Bromberg
- Mark Fisher
- Lawrence Judd
- John Meadows
- Richard Bell
- Layne Norton (talks about his own infidelity)
- Yoni Freedhoff
- Eric Trexler
- Mike Israetel
- Nick Tumminello
- Christian Thibaudeau
- Brad Schoenfeld
- Bryan Krahn (good post on the big picture)
- Jay Woith (organizer, and gives a big shoutout to Brad Dieter as someone who did and not just talked)
