Ala. Dem. calls Clarence Thomas 'Uncle Tom,' disparages marriage to white woman
February 12, 2014
While making a statement on the floor of the Alabama statehouse, Rep. Alvin Holmes, a black Democrat, made disparaging comments about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and later called him an "Uncle Tom," the National Review Online reported Wednesday.
Mary Sell, a reporter with the Decatur Daily, claimed in a tweet that Holmes said he didn't like Thomas because of his interracial marriage.
"Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, just said on House floor that he doesn't like Clarence Thomas because 'he's married to a white woman,'" Sell tweeted.
Holmes later claimed he made no such statement, but another reporter, Tim Lockette of the Anniston Star, tweeted the same thing.
"Holmes said he doesn't like Clarence Thomas because Thomas is married to a white woman. This in discussion on a bill about land surveying," he tweeted.
Holmes later backtracked, saying his comment about interracial marriage was misinterpreted, Lockette tweeted.
"I said some people might say I didn't like him because he was married to a white woman.," he reportedly told Lockette.
But Holmes still thinks Thomas, the only black Supreme Court Justice, is a sell-out.
"I said I don't like him at all because he is an Uncle Tom," Holmes said.
On the same day Holmes made his statement, Thomas told a group he has received worse treatment from "northern liberal elites" than from anyone in the segregated South, NRO said.
“The worst I have been treated was by northern liberal elites. The absolute worst I have ever been treated,” he told a group at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida. “The worst things that have been done to me, the worst things that have been said about me, by northern liberal elites, not by the people of Savannah, Georgia.”
As we reported last June, Minnesota state Rep. Ryan Winkler, a Democrat, called Thomas an "Uncle Tom" on Twitter. Others, like MSNBC's Touré, have sent hateful messages including death wishes, while others have called for Thomas and his wife to be lynched.
Thomas said he'd "still be in Savannah" if he was as sensitive about race as some are today.
Nowadays, he added, “somebody doesn’t look at you right, somebody says something.”
