Since this is the producer and rappers forum and I figure some of you have done shows before I figure I would give you a heads up.

I've been making music and DJing for 15 years now. Back in 2009, I had a representative from this company Afton Live (formerly Big Time Entertainment) reach out to me via myspace. They said "hey, I like your music. I'm booking some gigs in the Pittsburgh area, are you interested?" Being young and naive (I thought to myself, "hey somebody finally is giving me an opportunity to showcase my music! yeah!") I was eager to take them up on my offer. I never really did though until this year. I moved out of Pittsburgh to NYC and was still doing DJ gigs and Afton reached out to me via e-mail. They had their NYC representative (Amy) reach out to me and tell me the same thing. Basically, they wanted me to play a show in Williamsburg at the Trash Bar. I was all up for it.

I signed up on the site, and basically in order to actually make it work, you have to sell 25 tickets to secure the set time you want. The money for the tickets is basically taken out of your own pocket and you have to pay them in advance ie. PAY TO PLAY. When all is said and done, you're basically playing a show for your family and friends (or people that will actually buy your tickets) and they take most (if not all) of your money. My experience with them was terrible. I was not paid at all and basically played an hour DJ set for free. And after talking to the show manager, they said that the mail out their payment from the bar and the door (plus ticket sales) via check after the show is over. Who does that?

In my experience playing shows, I've always received payment immediately after the show. I've never dealt with anybody like this and will ever again.

So if you get any e-mails or messages from twitter, soundcloud etc from them...keep this in mind. Never pay to play. Afton basically facilitates a party for your friends and take nearly all your money leaving you with little in return. There's nothing they do that you couldn't do yourself as a performer.
