Why are differing points of view the same as "tearing us apart"? There's an argument to be made that on the surface BP does make aframs look hyperviolent and far too angry. ON THE SURFACE. But part of what makes BP a great movie is the nuance and layers it presents about the african experience and the discussion it generates.
Arguably most aframs agree that killmonger is the actual hero in this movie. If someone doesn't, so what? Let'em live. The world's not gonna end because someone has a different opinion.
I had not yet shared my impression of the movie on the forum since i saw it. My point is i feel the shyt was overblown both from hype and also peoples interpretation of the movie and there seems to be so much discussion and arguing about a fictional movie.
Killmonger, to me, is like Magneto. He means well for his people but has a different approach on the execution. We've seen this before in history where two leaders come from different angles and people take sides. You have the MLK vs Malcolm X debate in the 60s. You have the Toussaint vs Dessalines debate in the Haitian revolution of the 1790s. On all of these the person that's sometimes depicted/perceived as either bad or over-agressive and violent wants the same thing as their other counterpart; freedom for his people.
Now, Killmonger was depicted as an agressive, overconfident black person with a chip on his shoulder who happens to be african american. I get that. But let's say you wanna rework the story you could have made Killmonger to be Jamaican, Brazilian, or any other nationality in the diaspora and it would still fit righ into the same script. African Americans werent the only ones that were enslaved or have a chip on their shoulder. Bottom line the film makers had to establish someone as a vilain thus why they had him burn the plant because up until that scene he hadnt done anything that was wrong, IMO.
- He came and brought along with him the body of an enemy Wakanda had been hunting for.
- He came in and had a legal claim to the crown and he claimed it.
- He won the challenge fair and square where M'Bakou (sp) failed.
Again, up until that burning of the plants he had done nothing wrong. But even after all this the film makers showed TChalla's sympathy for Killmonger by taking him up to see the sunset. SHowing that while T'Challa had to stop him, he understood where he was coming from and would take action mving forward.
Edit: Cant believe i jumped into this nonsense debate but fukk it.
