Everyone knows the Blues is a cousin of west-african musical traditions, accompanied by european instruments (Moorish/Spanish Guitar, German Harmonica, Turkish cymbals for drums etc.)
But with these guitarists, you can see/hear the overlap between the traditional and contemporary tradtions.
Obviously there are similar melodies, use of the flatted third, and also poly-rhythms (using the thumb for a steady bass note, then playing another rhythm on the higher strings). Also the style of guitar playing (using a thumb and a forefinger) can be traced to traditional african instruments like the sintir, or even the kalimba.
