While the economy continues to improve and wages are finally beginning to inch up for most Americans, African Americans are still being paid less than whites at every education level. As you can see from the chart below, while a college education results in higher wages—both for whites and blacks—it does not eliminate the black-white wage gap. African Americans are still earning less than whites at every level of educational attainment. A recent EPI report, Black-white wage gaps expand with rising wage inequality, shows that this gap persists even after controlling for years of experience, region of the country, and whether one lives in an urban or rural area. In fact, since 1979, the gaps between black and white workers have grown the most among workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher—the most educated workers. More school will certainly increase wages, but education alone is not enough to overcome the effects of racial discrimination in pay. Closing this part of the racial pay gap begins with consistent enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in the hiring, promotion, and pay of women and minority workers, as well as greater transparency around within-firm pay by race, ethnicity, and gender.

Just means you need to learn how to research and negotiate your wage in addition to living well below your means(which we should be doing anyway). Also consider moving to a state/location with higher median income. Chart doesn't break it down by location which is key. Location coupled with education is everything. This allowed Black women to out earn White women in London and I hope Brexit doesn't reverse things.

It doesn't matter. In a general comparison of all races, we will always be paid less, just like in a general comparison women will make less than men. The individual is always going to be the most impact in the long run. That's another reason why I smh at people who look down on middle/upper class blacks. They may be doing "better" than the working class, but they are still facing economic discrimination.

Here's Bloomberg's full "worst" 10 list, ranked by future median salary gap for full-time workers aged 25 to 59 with bachelor's degrees.

1. Pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences and administration: $119,000 for white graduates; $84,400 for black graduates

2. Chemical engineering: $103,000 for white graduates; $72,800 for black graduates

3. Electrical engineering: $100,000 for white graduates; $72,200 for black graduates

4. Miscellaneous industrial arts and consumer services: $65,200 for white graduates; $40,200 for black graduates

5. Economics: $79,500 for white graduates; $55,200 for black graduates

6. Computer science: $88,300 for white graduates; $65,200 for black graduates

7. Industrial production technologies: $76,800 for white graduates; $55,400 for black graduates

8. Chemistry: $69,100 for white graduates; $48,900 for black graduates

9. Finance: $76,200 for white graduates; $56,700 for black graduates

10. Management information systems and statistics: $82,500 for white graduates; $63,200 for black graduates

Four of the five most equally paying majors — art and music education, fine arts, elementary education, theology and religious vocations — all pay less than $50,000 a year.

The only exception: Black and white graduates can expect to make about $65,000 working in the field of nursing.

In fact, since 1979, the gaps between black and white workers have grown the most among workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher—the most educated workers.

Many if not most middle-class blacks are employed in government. Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980. Since then taxes have been slashed across all levels of government resulting in fewer middle-class jobs for blacks.

More school will certainly increase wages, but education alone is not enough to overcome the effects of racial discrimination in pay.

Many blacks with advanced degrees are in education so opportunities and income are limited by that decision. Blacks in other fields find themselves with fewer people to network with compared to whites and Asians which has a profound affect on the ability to find employment. Blacks also gravitate toward non-selective colleges which aren't highly valued in the market place and are poor places to professionally network.

Closing this part of the racial pay gap begins with consistent enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in the hiring, promotion, and pay of women and minority workers, as well as greater transparency around within-firm pay by race, ethnicity, and gender.

Mindless nonsense. Government regulation and threats of lawsuits make companies less willing to hire and promote women and minorities. Companies are allowed to discriminate against Americans and avoid those problems with temporary foreign workers. Several companies have fired and replaced their entire tech force with H1B visa holders.

I am incredibly unhappy with the Georgetown data they used, because the controls aren't all that well-functioning.
"Advanced degree" is a lazy "catch-all" category, and there are huge gaps in "MBA" "JD" and "MD" program salaries.
Controlling for "region" does not control for racialised areas within those regions.

I would not put much stock into this, especially considering it does not take into consideration the more relevant variables. I would like to see a breakdown based on major, cities, and university tiers. I remember when I was in undergrad the Urban League had a book filled with data, and one of the charts revolved around what majors Black students study, and they were overwhelmingly non-STEM. That is not to say a drastic disparity will not show up if you take into consideration the relevant variables, but in my experience it will make a difference.

And? wtf do you expect? We can't be looking towards white people to help us, its up to us and if these last 50 years of "civil rights" hasn't shown you then idk what more to say to you.

This is why as a black person I strongly encourage blacks to get into STEM careers. Both my parents and my stepdad have all been in STEM jobs and it affords you lucrative pay.

Even if you get paid less at first, you acquire the experience and go to other places and get paid.

I think it's unrealistic to not play the game. You have to negotiate and also work for a company that is probably white owned. We know the panacea (start supporting our businesses, building opportunities for each other) but that takes generational effort and capitol to start.
