BBC News - Abuja blast: 'Car bomb' rocks Nigerian capital

An apparent car bomb attack has killed at least nine people in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, officials say.

The explosion happened in the suburb of Nyanya, close to a motor park where at least 70 people died in a blast on 14 April.

Witnesses said it went off near a police checkpoint.

No group has claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack. The Islamist militant group Boko Haram has previously targeted locations in Abuja.

"When it happened I fell down... I just fell down," one man told Nigerian television at the scene.

The National Emergency Management Agency said nine people had died and many more were injured.

Campaign of violence
Most of Boko Haram's attacks have been in the north-east of Nigeria.

But the bombing on 14 April, which it later claimed, raised fears that the militants could be trying to expand their area of operation.

The BBC's Will Ross in says the latest blast comes at a terrible time for Nigeria, which is also dealing with the the abduction of 230 schoolgirls that happened hours after the previous Nyanya attack.

Boko Haram's fighters have killed more than 1,500 civilians in three states in north-east Nigeria this year.

The group has hit Abuja several times before, including an attack on the United Nations building in 2011.

But before 14 April, there had not been an attack in the capital for two years, our correspondent says.

The Nigerian government had said the violence was contained in a small area of the north-east.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language, has been waging a campaign of gun and bomb attacks since 2009.

As i said in another thread. This is all tied into the 2015 elections and the distribution of the expiring oil blocs. Sadly its only going to get worse.

explain??

Basically majority of Nigerias Oil Block leases are going to expire from 2016-2019. They are currently held by International oil companies and private individuals.

Now Nigerias elections are going to be held February of 2015. Whoever is in power will have the authority to award the licensees to whoever they see fit. So some of these powerful people want to ensure that the Oil blocks are forever safe in their hands.

Also Nigerias current govenremnt has angered certain individulas by awarding present expiring oil blocks to indigenous oil firms at the expense of the international ones.

Nigeria has awarded most of its long-term oil contracts worth an estimated $40 billion a year to local companies, according to a confidential list seen by Reuters, meaning global traders need to partner with them to access crude from Africa's top producer.

It is part of the present governments local content policy which is aimed at breaking the hold international firms have over Nigerias oil and empowering local firms.

By way of example, the Local Content Act provides that “Nigerian independent operators shall be given first consideration in the award of oil blocks, oil field licences, oil lifting licences and all projects for which contract is to be awarded in the Nigerian oil and gas industry

On top of it all the Petrolium Industrail Bill which is going to be passed this year will be the nail in the coffin for international oil firms in the country.

Although many believe that the bill has been delayed for so long because of the International Oil Companies (IOCs) who have reservations about the effect on their businesses and investments, the eventual approval and implementation of the bill will hopefully send ripples of transformation through the industry and create a change that will diffuse the monopoly of foreign multinationals and usher in stability and increased local participation in the industry.

As you can see the stake are high and there is a battle for control of the countries oil and boko haram is more or less an instrument of said individuals,

Yep... at the moment the oil blocks are held by mainly northern politicians and international oil companies. So I wont be surprised if boko haram is getting funding from one or even both of these groups. (Royal dutch shell have experience in hiring mercenaries to do dirty work in the Niger Delta)
I mean if you look at the link I gave you for the petroleum industrial bill that is to be made into law this year you will see that the international oil companies like shell and chevron have stalled the bill since 2010 and now regardless of their stance its going to be passed. The bill will really break thier hold on Nigeria's oil industry. Then when you add the whole oil well expiry its checkmate for all groups.

Thanks for the input. I have said it before and I will say it again,... Nigeria is not a country, it is a corporate entity.
