Since Kendrick Lamar dropped his earth-shattering “Control” verse in 2013, Jay Electronica has sent shots to King Kunta on a few occasions.
Remember when Jay Elect said Lamar wished he could be him and called him “his son”?
Top Dawg Entertainment’s Dave Free even called the “Exhibit C” rapper a “desperate housewife” in response. Though Electronica eventually sent an olive branch and apologized, Ab-Soul decided to take up for his Black Hippy family on Do What Thou Wilt opener “RAW (backwards).”
I was like a swami of Jay Electronica until he
Figured Dizzle wouldn't admit that he would body him for a milli
I told Kenny keep quiet, I'ma get him
We don't need dirt on your hands getting the key to the city ya feel me
Hurts when your OG, who is supposed to be a G-O-D
Is standing next to King Kunta feeling like Toby
Breakdown
This originates from when Soulo was part of the special guests for the second annual STEEZ Day festival held in Los Angeles (by Pro Era). During Ab’s set, he went a capella and fired shots at Jay Electronica.
Soulo says he was fan of Jay Electronica until he couldn’t admit that Kendrick Lamar is the better rapper. Soulo told Kendrick to refrain from responding and let Soul handle it to ensure his image remained clean. The “getting your hands dirty” describes Kendrick ‘killing’ Jay. However, Kendrick must remain clean as he was given the Key to the City of Compton in February 2016.
In these lines, Soulo expresses his hurt to see a hip-hop legend, with the prominence of a God in rap (God MC), being belittled into being a “Toby” rather than Kunta Kinte. Kunta was a slave character in the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976), but his given slave name was Toby. “King Kunta” of course refers to Kendrick’s hit song and is also a picture of how Kendrick is emancipated and the superior to Toby (Jay Electronica).
