This is more of a sad coincidence, but when Phife died and everyone was mourning him at Q-Tip's place, Ali wasn't there for that, either. He had just gotten a new phone so when he heard the news, he couldn't call anyone.
This is just my theory, but based on these situations and how he came off in the documentary, Ali just seems cool with everything that happens. Whatever gets in the way of his work or his situation, he just pushes it off and he's only concerned with what he needs to do.
