I disagree. I don't think it says much about black people 50 years ago. I think it says something about white people 50 years ago.

I think there's some theory that people of color have done something to integrate themselves into white society and to ingratiate themselves with white people and that this has represented some form of advancement and progress for people of color. And as a result of our efforts, we have caused white people to change their views toward us, i.e. white people today look at us differently than the white people 50 years ago.

Some people of color think: "White people like us now...or at least they don't hate us...openly...this is good ...let's keep it going this way."

So when some person of color does something to draw the ire and disapproval of whites, this somehow might jeopardize the new standing and relationship that a people of color has developed with whites.

Some people of color wonder: "How will whites respond? Will they go back to being racist? After all, they now have a reason or justification to act fukked up since this nikka did what he did. He got out of line, gotdamnit. All of the progress we've built with whites is lost. "
