Not long ago, the Earth Island Institute asked the villagers in the Solomon Islands to stop killing dolphins for meat and income, and promised to pay them $400,000.
But once the residents only saw a fraction of the promised money, they SLAUGHTERED at least 900 dolphins.
Radio Australia Fanalei Honiara Association chairman, Atkin Fakaia said the villagers did this as retaliation, adding:
"The issue of them going back fishing
and killing dolphins was on the understanding that Earth Island has been reluctant to pay the agreed amount that was due to the community. So they just felt
disappointed and dissatisfied over the attitude of Earth Island."
But what makes this matter even worse is the fact that the institute stayed true to their deal, which was to pay the dough over the time frame of two years. Plus the organization's director, Lawrence Makili, noted that they had also set up a whole mess of projects, so more moola would generate into the village.
And now that the damage is done, Makili thinks the community is "evil," and wants no part in helping them.
