Porter-Formella, Fundora-Gallimore - PBC on FOX, August 22
By Keith Idec

Published On Sat Aug 8, 2020, 09:16 PM EST

FOX announced during its Jamal James-Thomas Dulorme broadcast Saturday night that Porter will battle Sebastian Formella in the network’s main event August 22 from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Las Vegas’ Porter and Germany’s Formella will compete in a 12-round IBF/WBC welterweight elimination match.

The co-feature of FOX’s tripleheader August 22 will pit Sebastian Fundora (14-0-1, 9 KOs), of Coachella, California, against Nathaniel Gallimore (21-4-1, 17 KOs), of Evanston, Illinois, in a 10-round junior middleweight match. Junior middleweight prospect Joey Spencer (10-0, 7 KOs) also will compete in a televised fight two weeks from Saturday night, but the Union City, California, resident’s opponent for that six-rounder hasn’t been secured.

The Porter-Formella show will include fights following the main event on FS1, though none of the bouts on the FS1 portion of that card were announced Saturday night.

Porter (30-3-1, 17 KOs), a former IBF and WBC 147-pound champion, is rated number one by the WBC and 10th by the IBF. Germany’s Formella (22-0, 10 KOs), who owns the IBO welterweight title, is ranked ninth by the IBF and 17th by the WBC.

The 33-year-old Formella will take a steep step up in class when he opposes Porter. The 32-year-old Porter will box for the first time since Errol Spence Jr. defeated him by split decision in their 12-round, 147-pound title unification fight September 28 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Spence dropped Porter in the 11th round of their very competitive contest, but Porter provided Spence with the toughest test of his career.

Judge Larry Hazzard Jr. scored that 12-round bout 115-112 for Porter. Hazzard was overruled by judges Rey Danesco and Steve Weisfeld, each of whom scored the action 116-111 for Spence.

Spence (26-0, 21 KOs), of DeSoto, Texas, retained his IBF 147-pound title and won the WBC crown from Porter.

Spence’s next fight also was announced during the telecast Saturday night. He’ll defend his IBF and WBC titles against Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs) in the main event of a FOX Pay-Per-View broadcast November 21 (Errol Spence, Danny Garcia Confirm FOX PPV Fight Set For November 21).

Porter beat Garcia by 12-round unanimous decision in September 2018 to win the then-vacant WBC welterweight title at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Spence-Garcia card tentatively is set to take place at Microsoft Theater. The site could change if COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and fans can attend that show.

Like I said in the other thread, Porter last few fights have all been rough fights, especially his last one and he been out the ring for a year. Expect a struggle performance.

its even more than that to me...porter has been struggling to make 147 for a min now..that and the hard fights...its only a matter of time before it catches up to him

Kenny Porter hesitated for a moment before coming out with it. The trainer and father of former two-time welterweight titlist Shawn Porter wanted to preface what he was about to say, then he said it—“We trained harder for this fight than we did for Errol Spence.”

Almost a year ago, Shawn put on the performance of his life when he gave WBC/IBF welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr. more misery than The Ring’s No. 6 pound-for-pound fighter anticipated or ever received in the ring.

Spence walked away with a split-decision victory in September 2019 that many argued could have went to “Showtime.”

About two weeks later, Spence was fortunate to walk away from a near-fatal car accident, while Porter walks his way back into the title picture.

This Saturday (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) on FOX, Porter (30-3-1, 17 knockouts) will take on Germany’s Sebastian Formella (22-0, 10 KOs) in what is deemed a WBC/IBF welterweight eliminator from the Microsoft Theatre, in Los Angeles, California.

So, Kenny Porter thought about the question: What did Shawn gain from the Spence fight?

“Honestly, nothing, because it just confirmed things I already knew about Shawn,” Kenny said. “We already knew we could do those things against Spence and be successful. Spence had to use dirty tactics. The low blows in the early rounds really had us change our strategy.

“Shawn’s legs weren’t there. If Spence was honest about it, he would have come out and said, ‘I had to hit him in his balls to slow him down,’ if he was going to tell the truth. Moving forward, if we see him again, we’ll prepared for that.

“We worked hard for that (Spence) fight. We put the same work in here for (Formella) as we did Spence. But Shawn would not want to say it, because this guy doesn’t have a name like Spence, but we harder for this fight than we did the Spence fight.”

Showtime is aware Formella is a boxer who likes to use the ring.

“The only place he seems to be able to work and the only place he seems comfortable is when he’s working outside,” Shawn said about Formella. “He likes to use his jab and he’s a tall, rangy guy. I haven’t gone back and studied my fight against Spence.

“This fight for me, like every fight moving forward, is the understanding that I have to be better. It’s a desire. That desire comes out every time I fight. I will say this about the Spence fight, I was very pleased and proud of my performance.

“This might shock a few people, but I was more disappointed that my hand touched the canvas in the 11th round of the Spence fight. That was more heartbreaking than I was in losing the fight. I’m looking forward to Saturday night. I can’t wait to fight again.

“I’m going to be patient, but more aggressive. People will see a different Shawn Porter than they’ve been used to seeing.”
