Ramirez (41-0, 27 KO) fights for the third time since vacating his title after five defenses, having tested the 175-pound waters with one-sided wins over Tommy Karpency and Alfonso Lopez. Barrera (22-3, 14 KO) represents his first true light heavyweight test, though he hasn’t fought since a June 2019 loss to Jesse Hart.

“I’m excited to be headlining this show in Los Angeles with Golden Boy Promotions,” said Gilberto Ramirez. “It’s going to be a great night of boxing with fans back in the stands. I’ve always enjoyed fighting here, and I can’t wait to put on a show to continue my hunt for the light heavyweight championship. I appreciate Oscar and the Golden Boy family for their love and support, and I look will forward to a great night of boxing.”

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to headline such a big card against Gilberto Ramirez,” said Sullivan Barrera. “I know that my opponent is a former world champion with a lot of experience and that he will come very much prepared. However, I feel that I have faced much better opposition. I’ve also spent my entire career in the light heavyweight division, something that will be totally new for him. It will be a difficult fight, but I will walk away with my hands raised in victory.”

Diaz (31-1-1, 15 KO) went from dominating Tevin Farmer in a breakout performance to losing his titles on the scales before drawing with Shavkat Rakhimov; he’d previously missed out on a chance to win the WBA featherweight belt in similar fashion. That presumably won’t be a concern against Fortuna (36-2-1, 25 KO), who had to settle for mauling Antonio Lozada in November among fizzled matchups against Luke Campbell, Jorge Linares, and teh aforementioned Garica.

“I’m stepping in for Ryan Garcia to challenge Javier Fortuna,” said Joseph Diaz Jr. “I wish him nothing but the best. Mental health is a very important matter that people should deal with. I’m excited and ready to go out there and redeem myself to all my fans. I’m extremely focused and locked in. Fight night is going to be a movie. I’ll be putting the whole 130 and 135-pound division on notice.”

“I’m very happy that Jo Jo Diaz has accepted the challenge to face me, as long as after the fight he makes no excuses for getting knocked out”, said Javier Fortuna. “I give Diaz credit for having the balls to fight me. Devin Haney doesn’t have those balls. But after I win this fight, Haney will have 90 days to find them. Haney can run but he can’t hide. Fight me or give up the WBC title!”

Undercard

Golden Boy is proud to announce two spectacular additions to the Zurdo vs. Barrera undercard as Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada (20-0, 8 KOs) challenges Tenkai Tsunami (28-12-1, 16 KOs) for the WBO Light Flyweight Championship and Hector Tanajara Jr. (19-0, 5 KOs) faces William “El Camaron” Zepeda (22-0, 20 KOs) in a lightweight clash.

The event will take place on Friday, July 9 at Banc of California Stadium in Downtown Los Angeles and will be streamed live on DAZN.

“When it comes to undercards, nobody does it better than we do,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “For all of us at Golden Boy, it is very important for fans to get their money’s worth when attending our events or watching from the comforts of their home.

That’s why we are committed to providing a full night of competitive action featuring the likes of Seniesa Estrada, Hector Tanajara Jr., William Zepeda and many more.”

Estrada is a 28-year-old world champion from East Los Angeles, California whose immediate goal is to capture gold in three divisions. In March, she faced Anabel “La Avispa” Ortiz to capture the WBA Minimumweight World Title. Now, she looks to capture a belt a 108 pounds to be one step closer to achieving her goal.

“I’m very excited to be fighting in Los Angeles again,” said Seniesa Estrada. “Fighting at home with my family, friends and fans there is the best feeling. LAFC is going to be a great venue for Golden Boy boxing. I can’t wait to win another world title in a second division.”

Tsunami, who will be defending her 108-pound title, is a two-division world champion who has a lot of experience fighting at a world championship level. Although making her United States debut, Tsunami feels she is not at a disadvantage because she has fought over a dozen times in foreign countries.

“I am excited to accept the challenge of young and fast-rising Estrada,” said Tenkai Tsunami. “I know Estrada is a good boxer. But I have superior experience and skills that I have gotten throughout my 16-year career and which I wish to use to be victorious. This is my first fight in the United States, but have fought in Mexico seven times, once in Chile and six times in Korea.”

As mentioned above, Hector Tanajara Jr. of San Antonio, Texas will face fellow Golden Boy contender William Zepeda of San Mateo Atenco, Mexico in a 10-round lightweight battle.

“These are the kinds of fights that will take my career to the next level,” said Hector Tanajara Jr. “A win against a tough, undefeated southpaw contender will show everyone that I am ready for a world title opportunity. I believe in my skills and my talent, and on July 9, I will put them on full display at Banc of California Stadium.”

“I’m ready to face the most difficult challenge of my career in Hector Tanajara Jr.,” said William Zepeda. “I have worked all my life to be able to fight on big stages such as the Zurdo vs. Barrera event. I know that Tanajara Jr. very elusive fighter, but I will do everything in my power to make him stand in the center of the ring and give a real show to all the fans.”

Diego De La Hoya (22-1, 10 KOs) of Mexicali, Mexico will face Bryan Chevalier (15-1-1, 12 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico in a 10-round featherweight fight.

In a historic bout for women’s boxing, Naoka Fujioka (18-2-1, 8 KOs), Japan’s only five-division world champion, will defend her WBA Flyweight World Championship against Mexican standout Sulem Urbina (12-1, 2 KOs).

Former world title challenger Lamont Roach Jr. (20-1-1, 8 KOs) of Washington, D.C. will participate in a 10-round super featherweight battle.

Explosive Armenian contender Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (19-3, 16 KOs) will return in a 10-round super bantamweight fight.

Heavyweight standout Mihai Nistor (2-0, 2 KOs) of Bucharest, Romania will fight in an eight-round bout against Colby Madison (9-2-2, 6 KOs) of Baltimore, Maryland.

Miguel Gaona of El Sereno, California will make his pro debut in a four-round lightweight battle.

Gilberto Ramirez-Sullivan Barrera DAZN Weigh-In Report From Los Angeles

Gilberto Ramirez is set for his Golden Boy Promotions debut.

The unbeaten former super middleweight titlist collides with Miami’s Sullivan Barrera (22-3, 14KOs) in the main event of Friday’s DAZN show live from Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. Both boxers made weight for the light heavyweight bout, which tops a four-fight telecast beginning 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. local time.

Ramirez weighed 174.6 pounds for his first fight since signing with Golden Boy earlier this year. Barrera also checked in at 174.6 pounds for his first fight in more than two years.

The bout will be the third at light heavyweight for Ramirez, who held the WBO super middleweight title for nearly three years before moving up in 2019. In his most recent start, the 30-year-old southpaw from Mazatlan, Mexico scored a tenth-round stoppage of Alfonso Lopez last December in Galveston, Texas. The bout was his first after severing ties with Top Rank earlier that year.

Barrera has not fought since a ten-round points loss to Jesse Hart in June 2019. The Cuban export has lost two of his last three starts, including a twelfth-round, technical knockout to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in March 2018.

In the evening’s chief support, former IBF junior lightweight titlist Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz (31-1-1, 15KOs) moves up in weight to challenge Dominican Republic’s Javier Fortuna (36-2-1, 25KOs).

Both boxers made weight for their vacant WBC interim lightweight title fight. Diaz weighed 134.4 pounds, coming in well under the limit after missing weight ahead of his 12-round draw with Shavkat Rakhimov in their clash this past February. Fortuna tipped the scale at a well-distributed 134.8 pounds.

The winner will become the mandatory challenger to reigning WBC lightweight titlist Devin Haney (26-0, 15KOs).

Seniesa Estrada (20-0, 8KOs) aims to become a two-division champion as she faces Japan’s Tenkai Tsunami (28-12-1, 16KOs) for the WBO junior flyweight title.

Estrada weighed 108 pounds for her second straight title fight in as many weight divisions. The East LA native delivered a tour-de-force performance in dethroning long reigning WBA strawweight titlist Anabel Ortiz this past March 20 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Tsunami weighed 107.2 pounds as she attempts the fourth defense of her WBO title. The 36-year-old from Tokyo makes her U.S. debut, having previously fought eight times in The Americas—seven in Mexico and once in Chile, also ending in defeat.

Opening the four-fight DAZN show, Hector Tanajara and William Zepeda collide in a scheduled 10-round battle of unbeaten lightweights.

San Antonio’s Tanajara (19-0, 5KOs) came in right at the 135-pound limit for his first fight since the pandemic. The 24-year-old was previously due to face former 130-pound titlist Alberto Machado this past March but was forced to withdraw after testing positive for COVID.

Zepeda (22-0, 22KOs) weighed 134.2 pounds for his second straight fight in the U.S. The concussive-punching 25-year-old southpaw from San Mateo Atenco, Mexico has stopped each of his previous 12 opponents, including a fifth-round knockout of Roberto Ramirez in his U.S. debut last November at Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California.

Zurdo coming out the woodworks now that the picture has cleared and he's not intended to be put in the same ring with Beterbiev

Often times we rightfully criticize TR for how they treat their fighters but this dude just straight left them when they were finally about to make him face tough competition, signed with GBP who hold no weight at 175 and 168, even less now that Bek lost to Rosado.
They talked something about Bivol vs Zurdo, but I'd be surprised.

Díaz Fortuna :jbhmm:

@Conscious Pilot how you see this one going down breh
It’s a real interesting fight bro…

Diaz looks filled out at the weigh ins and he’s definitely got skills. This being his first fight at 135 against a capable guy like Fortuna, is not an easy task at all. I lean towards Jojo in a close decision. I can see him out working Fortuna despite getting rocked once or twice.
