Oscar Valdez vs. Jayson Velez - Card Finalized For July 21
By Random Hits

Published On Tue Jul 14, 2020, 01:51 PM EST

The first run of Top Rank on ESPN shows inside the MGM Grand “Bubble” will conclude with former featherweight world champion Oscar Valdez, ranked No. 1 by the WBC and WBO at junior lightweight, facing former world title challenger Jayson Velez in the 10-round main event Tuesday, July 21, inside the MGM Grand Conference Center.

In the eight-round co-feature, super middleweight knockout sensation Edgar Berlanga (13-0, 13 KOs), who has knocked out 13 consecutive foes in the first round to begin his pro career, will look to extend the streak against Eric Moon (11-2, 6 KOs).

The card also will highlight the long-awaited return of Kim Clavel, the undefeated light flyweight who won the 2020 Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYs for her work as an elder care nurse in Montreal during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clavel, who is promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), will fight fellow unbeaten Natalie Gonzalez in an eight-rounder.

Valdez-Velez, Berlanga-Moon, Clavel-Gonzalez, and undercard bouts will be televised live on ESPN & ESPN Deportes beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“Oscar Valdez wants to fight WBC world champion Miguel Berchelt, and I know Miguel wants nothing more than to fight Oscar,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Oscar knows Jayson Velez is a serious challenge that he cannot overlook. This is a great main event, and an incredible deep card, to close out our first round of shows inside the ‘Bubble.’”

Valdez (27-0, 21 KOs) has won three fights since his March 2018 war of attrition against Scott Quigg, when his jaw was shattered in the fifth round of a 12-round championship bout. He took nearly one year off following the Quigg fight and moved up to the junior lightweight ranks last year. In his last outing, November 30 in Las Vegas, he survived a second-round knockdown to knock out Adam Lopez in the seventh.

Velez (29-6-1, 21 KOs), from Juncos, Puerto Rico, nearly won the IBF featherweight world title from Evgeny Gradovich in November 2014, but he was held to a controversial draw. He has fought from featherweight to lightweight in recent years and March 2018 knockout victory over former world champion Juan Manuel Lopez. Velez was one half of a Fight of the Year Contender in February, as he knocked down Jaime Arboleda in the 12th round, only to lose a split decision verdict by a single point on two of the judges’ scorecards. He has never been knocked out in a career that’s spanned nearly 13 years.

Valdez said, “I’m ready for the best of the division. I want to be a two-division world champion, and the only way to do that is to beat tough fighters like Jayson Velez, who has challenged for a world title and possesses a lot of experience. Also, I’m very thankful to be fighting during this critical time where the sport of boxing is getting attention again.”

“We know there have been discussions about me challenging Miguel Berchelt for his WBC super featherweight world title, but Velez is first. I need to beat Velez first if I want to fight Berchelt, and I'm expecting a very tough fight. I want to dedicate this fight to all of the nurses and doctors who are working hard on this pandemic and to my father, Top Rank, and my manager, Frank Espinoza. I can’t wait to return to the ring.”

Said Velez, "Oscar Valdez is the greatest name I have ever had the opportunity to face. He is a young, undefeated fighter who was already a world champion and is hungry for another world title. At this stage of my career, I see each fight as if it were the last chance to achieve my dream. It's now or never. We are going to make that dream come true.”

Berlanga, the brash Brooklynite nicknamed “The Chosen One,” took care of Cesar Nunez in 2:45 last December on the Terence Crawford-Egidijus Kavaliauskas undercard at Madison Square Garden. Moon has won four of his last five and has been knocked out only once since turning pro in July 2016. He has fought eight or more rounds five times.

Said Berlanga, “I've not really changed much about training because of the knockout streak. Training is all about improving as a boxer. I had a good amateur career, and that comes from being a good technical boxer. My focus in training has been to continue to improve my skills under my trainer, Andre Rozier, and Team Havoc.”

Clavel (11-0, 2 KOs) is coming off a career-best win last December, a decision over Esmeralda Gaona Sagahon that earned her the NABF light flyweight belt. The belt won’t be on the line against Gonzalez (6-0, 1 KO), a native of New Rochelle, New York, who was a two-time New York Golden Gloves champion as an amateur.

In undercard action:

Former junior featherweight world champion Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe (20-2, 14 KOs), on the comeback trail following back-to-back defeats to Emanuel Navarrete, will face two-time world title challenger Chris “The Hitman” Avalos (27-7, 20 KOs) in an eight-round featherweight battle.

Elvis “The Dominican Kid” Rodriguez (7-0-1, 7 KOs), who is coming off a highlight-reel first-round KO July 2 against Danny Murray, will face Kenyan veteran Dennis Okoth (4-3-1, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder at junior welterweight.

Italian heavyweight destroyer Guido “The Gladiator” Vianello (7-0, 7 KOs) will aim to make it eight knockouts in as many fights against an opponent to be named in a six-rounder. Vianello, a 2016 Olympian, knocked out Don Haynesworth in one round June 9.

Raphael “Trouble" Igbokwe (14-2, 6 KOs), winner of two straight bouts, will fight Genc Pllana (8-1-1, 4 KOs) in an eight-round super middleweight bout originally scheduled for July 16.

Valdez-Velez: Guido Vianello To Face Kingsley Ibeh On Undercard
By Jake Donovan

Published On Sat Jul 18, 2020, 10:24 AM EST

Kingsely Ibeh is prepared to make history in The Bubble.

Already armed with two wins in a one-week span, the Phoenix-based Nigerian is set to become the first three-time participant on Top Rank’s current closed-doors summer series. Event handlers have confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Ibeh has emerged as the opponent of choice for Italy’s Guido Vianello, as the two will collide in a heavyweight preliminary bout on July 21 at MGM Grand Conference Center (“The Bubble”) in Las Vegas.

The fight will serve in supporting capacity to a 10-round junior lightweight headliner between former featherweight titlist Oscar Valdez (27-0, 21KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Jayson Velez (29-6-1, 22KOs).

Vianello (7-0, 7KOs) will make his second Bubble appearance, having fought on the undercard of the series debut. The 2016 Italian Olympian scored a 1st round knockout versus soft touch Don Haynesworth, though figures to endure a far stiffer challenge on Tuesday.

Ibeh has emerged as a cult favorite, on the strength of appearances on consecutive Thursdays preceding Independence Day. The 26-year old avenged his lone career defeat in scoring a 4th round stoppage of Waldo Cortes on the June 25 edition of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN. One week later, the full-time insurance salesman and now aspiring heavyweight prospect was forced to go the six-round distance in claiming a majority decision over previously unbeaten Patrick Mailata.

An entirely different beast awaits him in Vianello, a 6’6” knockout artist who is now based out Las Vegas.

The 26-year old has been a knockout every time out in the pro ranks, with his deepest fight to date coming in a 3rd round stoppage of Cassius Anderson last September at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Vianello—who has worked with current lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (30-0-1, 21KOs) has fought just 11 rounds to date in his pro career.

Oscar Valdez-Jayson Velez Weigh-In Results From Las Vegas
By Keith Idec

Published On Mon Jul 20, 2020, 04:36 PM EST

The weigh-in for Oscar Valdez’s televised fight Tuesday night was quite different than when he weighed in the day before his last fight.

Valdez’s opponent, Jayson Velez, was heavier than Valdez when they stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale Monday, but Velez wasn’t absurdly overweight. Puerto Rico’s Velez (29-6-1, 21 KOs) officially weighed in at 130 pounds, the contracted maximum for their 10-round junior lightweight fight.

Mexico’s Valdez (27-0, 21 KOs) came in at 129¾ pounds for the main event of a six-fight card at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

valdez-quigg-fight%20(14).jpg

The last time Valdez arrived at the NSAC’s scale in Las Vegas, his opponent, Mexico’s Andres Gutierrez, laughably weighed in at 141 pounds, a whopping 11 pounds over the contract weight for Valdez’s debut as a full-fledged junior lightweight November 30. Adam Lopez replaced Gutierrez at the 11th hour, after Lopez already had weighed in at 126 pounds for an eight-round featherweight fight against Luis Coria, which was supposed to be part of the Valdez-Gutierrez undercard at The Cosmopolitan.

Valdez, a former WBO featherweight champ, struggled against Lopez, who dropped Valdez in the second round. Valdez came back to floor Lopez in the seventh round, when Valdez won by technical knockout.

Earlier Monday, Edgar Berlanga and Eric Moon made weight for the eight-round light heavyweight encounter ESPN will broadcast immediately before the Valdez-Velez bout.

The 23-year-old Berlanga (13-0, 13 KOs), a hard-hitting super middleweight prospect from Brooklyn who has knocked out each of his pro opponents in the first round, officially weighed 169 pounds. The 29-year-old Moon (11-2, 6 KOs), of Marietta, Georgia, weighed in at 168½ pounds.

Another fight that was scheduled for Tuesday night, a four-round heavyweight bout between Italy’s Guido Vianello (7-0, 7 KOs) and Phoenix’s Kingsley Ibeh (5-1, 4 KOs), was canceled Monday because Ibeh tested positive for COVID-19.

The weights for the other four fights on Tuesday’s card are listed below. Only the Pllana-Igbokwe bout will not be televised live by ESPN, which will begin its coverage at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Isaac Dogboe (20-2, 14 KOs), Accra, Ghana, 126 pounds vs. Chris Avalos (27-7, 20 KOs), Lancaster, California, 126¼ pounds, 8 rounds, featherweights.

Kim Clavel (11-0, 2 KOs), Montreal, 109½ pounds vs. Natalie Gonzalez (6-0, 1 KO), New Rochelle, New York, 109¾ pounds, 8 rounds, flyweights.

Elvis Rodriguez (7-0-1, 7 KOs), Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 141½ pounds vs. Dennis Okoth (4-3-1, 2 KOs), Siaya, Kenya, 141½ pounds, 6 rounds, welterweights.

Genc Pllana (8-1-1, 4 KOs), Hagerstown, Maryland, 167¼ pounds vs. Raphael Igbokwe (14-2, 6 KOs), Fresno, Texas, 165 pounds, 8 rounds, super middleweights.

Igbokwe Tests Positive for COVID, Pllana Rematch Pulled From Valdez-Velez Card
By Jake Donovan

Published On Tue Jul 21, 2020, 02:10 PM EST

For the second time in as many days, Tuesday’s edition of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN has lost a fight due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The latest fallout comes on fight day, as a planned rematch between super middleweights Raphael Igbokwe and Genc ‘The Sexy Albanian’ Pllana will no longer take place. BoxingScene.com has learned that Houston’s Igbokwe (14-2, 6KOs) tested positive for COVID-19, the result coming to light less than 24 hours after both boxers made weight for their undercard appearance which was to have taken place prior to the start of the ESPN telecast.

Headlining the show, unbeaten former featherweight titlist Oscar Valdez (27-0, 21KOs) faces Puerto Rico’s Jayson Velez (29-6-1, 21KOs) in a 10-round junior lightweight contest. Their bout and the remaining four fights on the card will proceed as planned, airing live on ESPN beginning at 8:00pm ET/5:00pm PT from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

igbokwe-pllana.jpg

News of Igbokwe’s positive test comes one day after the show lost a heavyweight clash between Guido Vianello (7-0, 7KOs)—who competed for Italy in the 2016 Rio Olympics—and Phoenix-based Kingsley Ibeh. The fight would have represented a third Bubble appearance for Ibeh, who scored wins on June 25 and July 2 from the closed-doors venue, but was denied the hat trick after also falling ill to the infectious disease.

The latest occurrence puts the count at 22 fights lost globally due strictly to COVID-19 since boxing resumed on June 9 after the sport was forced to shut down in mid-March due to the ongoing health crisis.

Further chalking up this matter to bad luck, the rematch between Pllana (8-1-1, 4KOs) and Igbokwe was previously budgeted for a July 16 show before being relocated to Tuesday’s card.

The first fight between the pair of 168-pound prospects took place last August, with Igbokwe earning an eight-round majority decision in his Houston hometown. Pllana is unbeaten in his four subsequent starts since then, the lone blemish coming in an eight-round draw with unbeaten Kalvin Henderson last December.
