Miguel “Escorpion” Marriaga’s quest for a fourth world title shot continues inside the MGM Grand “Bubble” Thursday, July 16, in a scheduled 10-round featherweight main event against Filipino veteran Mark John Yap.

In the 10-round lightweight co-feature, Puerto Rico's Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo, closing in on a world title shot of his own, will fight the unbeaten Will Madera.

Marriaga-Yap, Verdejo-Madera, and undercard bouts will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“Miguel stayed in shape throughout the pandemic and was willing to fight anyone we put in front of him,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Felix is so close to realizing his potential, and with a great trainer like Ismael Salas in his corner, anything is possible. This is going to be an action-packed card, and both Miguel and Felix will be tested.”

Marriaga said, “I stayed in shape during the pandemic, and I am thankful to my team for this wonderful opportunity. I want to be a world champion, and a win over Yap will move me one step closer to my ultimate goal. Yap is much better than his record indicates. Neither of us will take a backward step.”

Marriaga (29-3, 25 KOs) fell short in world title fights against Nicholas Walters, Oscar Valdez and Vasiliy Lomachenko, but he has knocked out four straight foes since the Lomachenko defeat in August 2017. He last saw action Dec. 7 in Pueblo, Mexico, and knocked out Alfredo Mejia Vargas with a body shot. Marriaga was scheduled to challenge Shakur Stevenson for the WBO featherweight world title March 14, but the bout was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yap (30-15, 15 KOs) is a 13-year pro and a former OPBF bantamweight champion who has not been knocked out since 2014.

Verdejo (26-1, 16 KOs) is seeking his fourth consecutive win since a shocking 2018 TKO loss at the hands of Antonio Lozada Jr. Now based in Las Vegas under the tutelage of Salas, the 2012 Olympian is coming off an ESPN-televised decision win Jan. 18 over Manuel Rey Rojas. Madera (15-0-3, 8 KOs), from Albany, New York, impressed American fight fans with his nationally televised decision win over the previously undefeated Thomas Mattice in February 2019. He is 2-0-1 since the Mattice victory, including a second-round stoppage over Edgar Ramirez on Jan. 28.

“July 16 marks my return to the ring against Will Madera in what will be my second fight with my new team,” Verdejo said. “This is a great opportunity to demonstrate the progress resulting from my work. I have renewed motivation to realize my dream of becoming a world champion. That is the goal."

In undercard action:

Alexis “Perro” del Bosque (17-5, 9 KOs), from Dallas, Texas, will take on an opponent to be named in an eight-rounder at lightweight. del Bosque, who has won four in a row, was scheduled to fight Joseph Adorno in the MGM Grand “Bubble” last month, but the fight was canceled after Adorno failed to make weight.

Featherweight prospect Martino Jules (9-0, 2 KOs), a former amateur standout from Allentown, Pennsylvania, will face the upset-minded Aleem Jumakhonov (8-2-2, 4 KOs) in an eight-rounder. Jumakhonov, who was born Tajikistan and now resides in Southern California, is coming off a unanimous decision over the previously undefeated Anthony Chavez.

Raphael “Trouble" Igbokwe (14-2, 6 KOs), winner of two straight bouts, will fight Genc Pllana (8-1-1, 4 KOs) in an eight-rounder at super middleweight. Pllana is coming off a nationally televised decision victory over Kevin Newman II (11-1-1 at the time) and a draw against Kalvin Henderson (12-0).

In a six-round welterweight tussle, Hector Madera (6-0, 3 KOs) will fight fellow unbeaten Adrian Valdovinos (5-0-1, 4 KOs).

Jared Anderson vs. Hector Perez Rescheduled For July 16 On ESPN
By Jake Donovan

Published On Sun Jul 12, 2020, 06:59 PM EST

Jared Anderson and Hector Perez are once again on the move.

The pair of Bubble-bound heavyweights now have their third working date for their previously postponed clash, with an appearance on the July 16 edition of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN written in pencil.

Should the date hold up, the bout will serve in supporting capacity to a show featuring featherweight contender Miguel Marriaga and Philippines’ Mark John Yap, along with a lightweight co-feature between Puerto Rico’s Felix Verdejo and unbeaten Albany-bred prospect Will Madera. All will air live on ESPN from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Previous plans called for the contest—originally due to take place July 9—to resurface on a July 21 show headlined by unbeaten former featherweight titlist Oscar Valdez. The latter date was the last of three proposed in hopes of clearing Perez (7-2, 3KOs), a 29-year old DominiRican based out of Tamarac, Florida whose post-fight urinalysis from a June 16 win in The Bubble showing accelerated levels of testosterone.

Further examination was required but enough to force the bout off of the June 9 show, with both boxers learning of the development prior to the pre-fight weigh-in.

“There was a minor issue with his urine sample,” William Ramirez, Perez’s manager explained to BoxingScene.com at the time. “The fight should be rescheduled for the 14th, 16th or 21st.”

The decision has apparently come to meet in the middle.

“Fight has just been pushed up to Thursday,” Anderson (4-0, 4KOs) confirmed on Sunday. “Let’s go!”

Anderson—a 20-year old rising knockout artist from Toledo, Ohio—fought on the first event in Top Rank’s current closed-doors Vegas series. The occasion marked the longest bout of his young career, stopping Johnnie Langston in three rounds after having fought a combined 4:54 worth of ring time in his three previous bouts.

Verdejo vs. Maderna Elevated to ESPN Main Event; Marriaga-Yap Off
By Jake Donovan

Published On Wed Jul 15, 2020, 05:40 PM EST

Miguel Marriaga was ready to fight.

Mark John Yap, to put it mildly, simply was not.

For the second time in as many shows this week, there comes a shakeup at the top level of a Top Rank on ESPN telecast live from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Thursday’s originally scheduled main event between Marriaga and Yap was cancelled by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), due to Yap weighing 136.7 pounds—nearly nine pounds above the contracted 128-pound limit for the contest.

Marriaga checked in at a fighting fit 127.3 pounds, though ultimately with nothing to show for it.

The show will go on, which is now down to four fights from an originally scheduled seven-bout slate. The new main event pits Puerto Rico’s Felix Verdejo (26-1, 16KOs) in a scheduled 10-round lightweight contest as he faces Albany’s Will Madera (15-0-3, 8KOs).

Their bout survived a minor scare when Madera came in just under the 136-pound contract limit after initially coming in slightly heavy. His second attempt registered at 135.8 pounds, slightly lighter than Verdejo, a 2012 Puerto Rico Olympian and 2013 BoxingScene.com Prospect of the Year who weighed 135.9 pounds.

As for Marriaga (29-3, 25KOs), it marks his second straight full training camp and stamped passport from his native Colombia to a fight destination only to never make his way to the ring. The 33-year old veteran contender—whose lone three defeats have all come in title fights—was hoping for the fourth time to be a charm as he was due to face then-reigning WBO featherweight titlist Shakur Stevenson.

The bout was cancelled two days prior to their March 14 ESPN date at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City due to the initial outbreak of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Marriaga’s handlers, All-Star Boxing Inc. had to get permission to fly in the featherweight for the fight. Marriaga was brought in on a humanitarian flight from Colombia just to arrive in Vegas well in advance to finish his second training camp for what was to be his first fight since last December.

Instead, it’s just the latest entry in a frustrating year.

“I just can’t catch a break,” Marriaga told BoxingScene.com in passing. “It’s a shame, I was ready to fight.”

Unfortunately, the boxer was bound by the rules of the NSAC, who rarely if ever allow a fight to proceed when one participant misses weight by more than a full weight division.

Yap (30-15, 15KOs) was too far above the limit to even attempt to shed weight, with the nine-pound disparity ultimately killing the contest. The Filipino journeyman will likely face a suspension and hefty fine for his lack of professionalism.

For the team at Top Rank, it’s a second straight juggling act.

Tuesday’s card from this very location saw unbeaten junior lightweight Mikaela Mayer (13-0, 5KOs) command the spotlight in a 10-round shutout of Helen Joseph. The first-ever female bout to headline on ESPN’s flagship station came about due to the 130-pound title fight between defending champ Jamel Herring (21-1, 10KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo (31-6, 19KOs) being canceled just prior to the weigh-in.

Herring was told to have once again tested positive for COVID-19 which delayed their previously scheduled July 2 clash. The 34-year old southpaw ultimately learned of it being a false positive, but too far after the fact as the commission’s zero-tolerance COVID protocol forced the bout’s cancellation.

Thursday’s makeshift main event between Verdejo and Madera tops a four-fight telecast.

Also on the show, heavyweight prospect Jared Anderson (4-0, 4KOs) faces Hector Perez (7-2, 5KOs) in a four-round battle of returning Bubble participants. Both scored separate wins in June and were due to collide one week ago, only for Perez—a 29-year old DominiRican from Tamarac, Florida—to be pulled after showing abnormal testosterone levels from a June 16 win in this very venue.

Anderson—an unbeaten prospect from Toledo, Ohio—appeared on the series’ inaugural installment on June 9, stopping Johnnie Langston in three rounds for his longest pro bout to date after scoring three straight 1st round knockouts to start his promising career.
