MGM Grand Conference Center – Grand Ballroom

Main Event
Alex Saucedo (29-1, 19 KOs) vs. Sonny Fredrickson (21-2, 14 KOs)
10 Rounds, Junior Welterweight

Saucedo has fought only once — a first-round knockout over Rod Salka — since he was knocked out by Maurice Hooker in November 2018 in a bid for the WBO junior welterweight world title. The Oklahoma City product is entering his second fight with head trainer Pedro Neme and will move closer to a second world title opportunity with a victory over the 6-foot-1 Fredrickson. From Toledo, Ohio, Fredrickson is a former U.S. amateur standout who is hoping to re-establish his momentum following a majority decision defeat to Samuel Teah last November.

“I have gotten a lot of quality sparring during the last few months, and I believe that’s going to show on June 30,” Saucedo said. “We have done 130 rounds in this camp sparring three times a week. We were able to get some taller guys to prepare for what Sonny brings to the table. I’ve worked on the things I need to win this fight. I’m still the same aggressive fighter, but we put a lot more movement in there. I’ve gone back to basics.”

Undercard

Junior welterweight prospect Josue “The Prodigy” Vargas (16-1, 9 KOs) will seek to increase his winning streak to 11 when he faces the battle-hardened Salvador Briceno (17-5, 11 KOs) in a 10-rounder. Vargas fought four times in 2019, including a win over Noel Murphy that earned him the IBF North American junior welterweight strap. Briceno is 4-2 in his last six fights, including competitive showings in decision losses to unbeaten prospects Gabriel Flores Jr. and Yomar Alamo.

Junior welterweight rising star John “El Terrible” Bauza (13-0, 5 KOs) will return from a nearly one-year layoff against the Irish-born, New York-based Larry Fryers (11-2, 4 KOs) in an eight-rounder.

Unbeaten Cleveland native Fred Wilson Jr. (6-0-2, 2 KOs) will face Rance Ward (4-1-1, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder at junior middleweight.

In a six-round junior welterweight bout, Adrian Valdovinos (5-0-1, 4 KOs) will fightGerardo Alvarez (2-2-2, 0 KOs).

Alex Saucedo-Sonny Fredrickson Weigh-In Results From Las Vegas
By Keith Idec

Published On Mon Jun 29, 2020, 03:31 PM EST

Alex Saucedo and Sonny Fredrickson made weight Monday two months after they initially were supposed to step on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale.

Saucedo officially weighed 140½ pounds for a 10-round welterweight fight ESPN will televise Tuesday night from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Fredrickson came in at 140¾ pounds.

The contract weight for the Saucedo-Fredrickson fight is 141 pounds.

Saucedo (29-1, 19 KOs), of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Fredrickson (21-2, 14 KOs), of Toledo, Ohio, first were scheduled to fight April 25 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. That card, which was to feature bantamweight champions Naoya Inoue and Johnriel Casimero in the main event, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now they’ll headline a four-fight ESPN telecast scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Earlier Monday, the Bronx’s Josue Vargas and Mexico’s Salvador Briceno made weight for their 10-round junior welterweight bout. Vargas (16-1, 9 KOs) weighed in at 140½ pounds, two more than Briceno (17-5, 11 KOs), who came in at 138¼ pounds.

ESPN’s broadcast also will include an eight-round junior welterweight bout between John Bauza (13-0, 5 KOs), of North Bergen, New Jersey, and Ireland’s Larry Fryers (11-2, 4 KOs). Bauza weighed in at 139¼ pounds, slightly more than Fryers, who was 138¾ pounds.

Donte Stubbs (6-0, 2 KOs), of Riverside, California, and Detroit’s Isiah Jones (8-2, 3 KOs) also met their contractual obligations for a six-round middleweight match ESPN will air Tuesday night.

Stubbs (6-0, 2 KOs) officially weighed 160¼ pounds. Jones stepped on the NSAC’s scale at 159¼ pounds.

Jones just lost a six-round unanimous decision to Georgian prospect Nikoloz Sikhniashvili (6-0, 4 KOs) in a fight ESPN televised June 16 from MGM Grand Conference Center.

Two fights were removed Monday from what was planned as a six-fight card Tuesday night.

Rance Ward (4-1-1, 2 KOs), of Houma, Louisiana, tested positive for COVID-19, which caused the cancelation of his six-round middleweight match with Cleveland’s Fred Wilson Jr. (6-0-2, 2 KOs).

Also, the pro debut of accomplished American amateur Javier Martinez was postponed because matchmakers couldn’t secure a suitable opponent in time. Milwaukee’s Martinez, 24, signed a promotional contract recently with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc
