Main Event
Andrew Moloney (21-0, 14 KOs) vs. Joshua Franco (16-1-2, 8 KOs)
12 Rounds, Moloney’s WBA Super Flyweight World Title

Andrew Moloney has won four consecutive bouts by knockout, including an eighth-round stoppage over Miguel Gonzalez on Gonzalez’s home turf in Chile. He captured the WBA interim world title last November, stopping Elton Dharry on cuts following eight one-sided rounds. The WBA elevated Moloney to full champion in March, and he will defend his strap against Franco, a San Antonio native who is best known for his action-packed trilogy against Oscar Negrete. Franco, who has gone five bouts since his lone professional defeat, went 1-0-2 versus Negrete.

“It’s a dream come true for me to be headlining at the MGM Grand for my first world title defense,” Andrew Moloney said. “Thank you to Top Rank and my team for giving me this amazing opportunity. Franco is a great fighter, but I believe I am faster, more powerful, and too hungry to let anyone take this belt away from me.”

Said Franco: “I have been waiting all my life to fight for a world title. I know that all my hard work will pay off when I step into the ring and become a world champion. These are tough times for the world, so I’m grateful to have this opportunity when the world has come to a halt. I will do my best to entertain the fans during this time and make my training team, promoter and everyone in San Antonio proud. This June 23, class will be in session, and everyone’s invited to watch on ESPN.”

Co-Feature
Christopher Diaz (25-2, 16 KOs) vs. Jason Sanchez (15-1, 8 KOs)
10 Rounds, Featherweight

In a clash of former world title challengers, the winner will re-enter the world title picture. Diaz is 2-1 since a decision loss to Masayuki Ito for the vacant WBO junior lightweight world title. Following the Ito loss, Diaz moved down in weight to compete as a featherweight. Sanchez gave a valiant effort in a June 2019 decision loss to then-WBO featherweight world champion Oscar Valdez. The Albuquerque native rebounded with a knockout win over Adeilson Dos Santos last October.

“I know that winning this next fight opens the door to a world title shot, and I have worked hard to make it happen and finally achieve my dream of becoming a world champion," Diaz said. "Jason Sanchez is a world-level opponent. His only defeat is against Oscar Valdez — and he is a seasoned Mexican warrior — but I am coming prepared for everything Sanchez will bring to the ring."

Undercard

Joseph “Blessed Hands” Adorno (14-0-1, 12 KOs), who is coming off an eight-round draw in January, will look to get back to his winning ways against Alexis del Bosque (17-5, 9 KOs) in an eight-rounder at lightweight.

In a junior welterweight battle set for six rounds, Miguel Contreras (10-0, 6 KOs), from Bakersfield, California, will fight 20-year-old knockout artist Rolando Vargas (5-0, 5 KOs).

Helaman Olguin (7-3, 3 KOs), winner of five straight, will take on Adam Stewart (8-0-1, 5 KOs) in a six-rounder at heavyweight.

Andrew Moloney-Joshua Franco Weigh-In Results From Las Vegas
By Keith Idec

Published On Mon Jun 22, 2020, 03:34 PM EST

Andrew Moloney and Joshua Franco made weight Monday afternoon for the first world title fight ESPN will televise since it began broadcasting boxing again June 9.

Australia’s Moloney officially weighed in at 114½ pounds for his defense of the WBA world super flyweight title Tuesday night at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. San Antonio’s Franco came in at 115 pounds even for their 12-round, 115-pound championship match.

Franco first stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at 115.2 pounds. He weighed exactly 115 pounds after taking off his underwear and his protective mask.

ESPN will televise the Moloney-Franco fight as the main event of a five-fight show scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

The 29-year-old Moloney is listed as a 9-1 favorite to defeat Franco, the WBA’s 12th-rated contender for his championship. Moloney was elevated from the WBA’s interim 115-pound champion to world champion since he won the WBA interim crown by stopping Guyana’s Elton Dharry (24-6-1, 14 KOs) after the eighth round of his last fight, November 15 in Melbourne, Australia.

Nicaragua’s Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (49-2, 41 KOs) is the WBA’s “super” champion in the 115-pound division.

The 24-year-old Franco stopped Mexico’s Jose Burgos (17-3, 14 KOs) in the ninth round of his last fight, January 11 in San Antonio. Franco went 1-0-2 in his three previous fights, all against Colombia’s Oscar Negrete (19-2-2, 7 KOs).

Earlier Monday, Christopher Diaz and Jason Sanchez made weight for their 10-round featherweight fight, the first bout ESPN will air Tuesday night.

Diaz (25-2, 16 KOs), of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, officially weighed 124¾ pounds. Sanchez (15-1, 8 KOs), of Albuquerque, New Mexico, came in at the featherweight limit of 126 pounds.

Below are weights for the three fights ESPN will televise between the Diaz-Sanchez and Moloney-Franco fights.

Joseph Adorno (14-0-1, 12 KOs), Allentown, Pennsylvania, 136 pounds vs. Alexis del Bosque (17-5, 9 KOs), Dallas, 134¼ pounds, 8 rounds, junior welterweights.

Miguel Contreras (10-0, 6 KOs), Bakersfield, California, 137¼ pounds vs. Rolando Vargas (5-0, 5 KOs), 137 pounds, Milwaukee, 6 rounds, junior welterweights.

Adam Stewart (8-0-1, 5 KOs), Phoenix, 232¼ pounds vs. Helaman Olguin (7-3, 3 KOs), South Jordan, Utah, 290 pounds, 6 rounds, heavyweights.

Joseph Adorno Sick, Pulls Out Of del Bosque Bout ESPN Was To Air Tuesday Night
By Keith Idec

Published On Tue Jun 23, 2020, 04:55 PM EST

After coming in a pound overweight Monday, Joseph Adorno never made it to the scale Tuesday in Las Vegas.

The 21-year-old lightweight was supposed to weigh in a second time Tuesday afternoon, but Adorno felt ill and withdrew from his scheduled eight-rounder against Alexis del Bosque. ESPN was supposed to televise the Adorno-del Bosque bout as part of a five-fight telecast from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Adorno (14-0-1, 12 KOs), of Allentown, Pennsylvania, officially weighed in at 136 pounds Monday, one above the contracted maximum. Dallas’ del Bosque (17-5, 9 KOs) stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at 134¼ pounds.

Their teams made an agreement with the NSAC that Adorno couldn’t weigh more than 142 pounds at another weigh-in Tuesday afternoon. Adorno didn’t weigh in a second time because he was sick.

Adorno-del Bosque was the second fight ESPN and promoter Top Rank lost Tuesday afternoon, though it wasn’t related to a failed COVID-19 test. Jamel Herring, the WBO junior lightweight champion, revealed on social media that he tested positive for the coronavirus last week and that his title defense versus Jonathan Oquendo has been postponed indefinitely.

The 12-round, 130-pound title bout between Herring (21-2, 10 KOs) and Oquendo (31-6, 19 KOs) was supposed to headline ESPN’s show July 2 from MGM Grand Conference Center.

Without Adorno-del Bosque, ESPN will proceed Tuesday night with a four-fight telecast.

The show will start at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT with Puerto Rico’s Christopher Diaz (25-2, 16 KOs) and Jason Sanchez (15-1, 8 KOs), of Albuquerque, New Mexico, in a 10-round featherweight fight. In the 12-round main event, Australia’s Andrew Moloney (21-0, 14 KOs) will defend his WBA world super flyweight title against San Antonio’s Joshua Franco (16-1-2, 8 KOs).

ESPN will broadcast two six-rounders between the Diaz-Sanchez and Moloney-Franco fights.

In one of those bouts, Miguel Contreras (10-0, 6 KOs), a junior welterweight from Bakersfield, California, will meet Milwaukee’s Rolando Vargas (5-0, 5 KOs). Also, Phoenix-based heavyweight Adam Stewart (8-0-1, 5 KOs) will battle Helaman Olguin (7-3, 3 KOs), of South Jordan, Utah.
