In his biggest test in the ring yet, Mexico's Jaime Munguia (41-0, 32 KOs) will make his return against the always dangerous Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs) in a 12-round middleweight fight on Saturday, June 10.

“I am very excited to return to the ring and even more excited to face a fighter like Derevyanchenko,” said Munguia.

“I think it will be a very intense fight from start to finish, but like always we are training very hard and are very ready to give the fans a very exciting fight. We will see you this June 10 in Southern California!”

The 12-round main event is scheduled to take place at Toyota Arena and is presented in association with Zanfer Boxing. The middleweight clash will be broadcast live worldwide on DAZN beginning at 5:00 p.m. PT/ 8:00 p.m. ET.

“Munguia has always wanted the toughest fights — and this is going to be one of them,” said Oscar De La Hoya, CEO and Chairman of Golden Boy Promotions. “For years, Derevyanchenko has gone life and death with the division’s top middleweights and has always reached the final bell. Should Jaime get past him — and I believe he will — he is immediately in position for a world title shot.”

Munguia was last seen in November 2022 easily cruising to a third round knockout victory against Gonzalo Coria in front of a hometown crowd in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Last July 2022, Derevyanchenko secured a unanimous decision victory against Joshua Conley. Derevyanchenko has faced the likes of Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin, Jermall Charlo, and other top names of the sport.

“We are very excited to face a great rival like Sergiy Derevyanchenko,” said Zanfer Boxing President Fernando Beltran. “Jaime is a fighter that never stops training who is looking to be the best - this fight is no exception. We will see the fans this June 10 for a great night of boxing where we are confident that we will leave the ring with our arms high in the air.”

Sergey got no punch resistance anymore

he doesn’t even try to box and trades instead
Derevyanchenko had such a mismanaged career...way too many hard fights plus he is 37...and apparently this fight will be at 168. Munguia might actually be the first to stop him.

Sergiy Derevyanchenko Wants To Steer Away From The Judges, Aiming To KO Munguia

Soft-spoken, unassuming, and a true gentleman - Sergiy Derevyanchenko reveres everyone that plays even the smallest part in the sport of boxing.
However, as the battle-tested veteran prepares for his ring return, he’s doing his best to render the judge’s job extraneous. On June 10th, at the Toyota Arena in California, the Ukrainian middleweight contender will look to hand Jaime Munguia the first defeat of his career.
Munguia, 26, has garnered a somewhat unwanted reputation. With the Mexican native facing less than stellar competition over the years, fans have grown tired of his ostensible unwillingness to step up to the plate.
Anxious to prove that he’s more than capable of pulling off a gigantic win, Derevyanchenko, after carefully examining what has gone wrong over the years, believes he’s pinpointed his biggest issue...shady judging.
“I don’t want decision,” said Derevyanchenko to BoxingScene.com during a recent interview. “I lost a decision to Daniel Jacobs, Golovkin, and every guy. It’s close fight and you don’t know who win. I don’t want decision.”
As Derevyanchenko alludes to, he came up on the losing end in some of his career-defining bouts. In October of 2017 and 2019, following back-and-forth brawls against Jacobs and Gennadiy Golovkin, the 37-year-old believed wholeheartedly that he did more than enough to earn a victory. Nevertheless, in what has become a growing theme, the three judges scoring ringside edged his bouts in favor of his opposition.
Training under the watchful eye of Andre Rozier, Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs) has strayed away from his typical box-first approach and has placed an emphasis on sitting down on his punches in an effort to hand his much younger foe a dirt nap.
With pain and anger fueling his new training regime, Derevyanchenko has one overarching goal come June 10th.
“I want to knock him out.”

best case scenario is derevyanchenko finds something and beats up and down munguia...lord knows his career needs it

worst case munguia sees that derevyanchenko is battle scarred and gives him a beat down which is what its looking like to me

derevyanchenko had too many hard fights in a row...he never shook off the GGG fight in particular..that damage from that fight is deep

De La Hoya: Derevyanchenko Was Best Fight We Can Make For Munguia

The knock on Jaime Munguia of late is the uninspiring competition he’s been facing. His 2022 campaign featured a trio of fights against the likes of Gonzalo Coria, Jimmy Kelly, and D'Mitrius Ballard. It didn’t fare much better in 2021 when it came to quality, as Munguia faced Gabriel Rosado and Kamil Szeremeta.

Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) has been stringing together wins against the lackluster competition, and many are calling for the 26-year-old to make a bigger leap 10 years into his pro career.
Up next for the Tijuana native Munguia is Sergiy Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs) on June 10 at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, Calif. headlining a card on DAZN.
“It was there for the taking. It was easy to make. This is the best fight we can make for Jaime Munguia at the time,” said Munguia co-promoter Oscar De La Hoya.
“Every fight that Jaime Munguia is in is a tough fight, is a difficult fight, especially Derevyanchenko because of his style. It's going to be the clash of the titans, and an all out war. And that's the reason they love watching Jaime Munguia. He's a warrior. He's a fan favorite when he steps inside the ring.”
The match will mark the super middleweight debut for both fighters.

De La Hoya said Munguia is fighting at 168 pounds because the WBC did not honor a request to make the winner of Munguia-Derevyanchenko the mandatory challenger for Jermall Charlo's 160-pound WBC belt.
Munguia, a former 154-pound titlist, had an opportunity to fight for the interim 160-pound WBO title against Janibek Alimkhanuly last year but punted on the opportunity. Alimkhanuly eventually found a new opponent, beat Denzel Bentley and picked up the full title once former champion Demetrius Andrade moved up to 168 pounds.
The 37-year-old Derevyanchenko has lost four out of his last six fights dating back to 2018 against the likes of Daniel Jacobs, Gennadiy Golovkin, Jermall Charlo, and Carlos Adames.
It can be argued that Munguia’s best win to date was his 2018 unanimous decision victory against Liam Smith. Smith has since revived his career with stoppage wins against Chris Eubank Jr. and Jessie Vargas .
“People know Derevyanchenko is going to come to fight. He's a dangerous fighter. People know it's going to be a tough fight. A difficult fight,” said De La Hoya. “Jaime Munguia is a fan favorite and a special fighter. He's only getting better, stronger, faster, and wiser. It will be an all-action packed fight. Hopefully we'll have Jaime Munguia moving on to bigger and better things.”

Returning the ring for the second time in 2023, Shane Mosley, Jr. (19-4, 10 KOs) will face a tough dance partner from Temple Hills, Massachusetts, D’Mitrius “Big Meech” Ballard (21-1-1, 13 KOs) in a 10-round middleweight scrap.
The fight is set as the co-main event for the anticipated Munguia vs. Derevyanchenko card scheduled for Saturday, June 10. The fight night, presented in association with Zanfer Boxing, will take place at Toyota Arena in Ontario. Doors to the Toyota Arena open at 3:00 p.m. PT and the DAZN broadcast begins at 5:00 p.m. PT/ 8:00 p.m. ET.
Mosley, Jr. has had back-to-back victories, including a tough fight with “King” Gabriel Rosado in April 2022 and an unanimous decision win against Mario Alberto Lozano in February 2023. Ballard is looking for a strong comeback into the ring after a TKO defeat against Munguia in February 2022.
Also on the DAZN card, Mexico City’s Mariana “Barby” Juarez (55-12-4, 19 KOs) will battle her compatriot also of Mexico City, Mayeli Flores (9-1-1, 3 KOs) in a 10-round super bantamweight fight. Juarez is a former two-division world champion who held the WBC female flyweight title and the WBC female bantamweight title. Juarez was last seen in the ring fighting Yamileth Mercado for the WBC World Super Bantamweight title in October 2022. Flores is a former world title contender and will be looking to move up in the rankings if successful against Juarez.
Opening the DAZN broadcast, Rialto’s Ricardo “El Niño” Sandoval (21-2, 16 KOs) will participate in a 10-round flyweight fight against Rocco “So Cal Kid” Santomauro (22-1, 6 KOs) of Los Angeles. Sandoval is coming off of an impressive second-round win against Jerson Ortiz on the Nery vs. Hovhannisyan card. Santomauro is a dangerous fighter whose only blemish is a seventh-round TKO loss against Diego De La Hoya in 2016.
On the preliminary card, fan-favorite from San Diego, Jorge “El Niño Dorado” Chavez (6-0, 5 KOs) will fight in a six-round super featherweight fight against Christian “El Niño” Lorenzo (3-4, 1 KO) of Los Angeles. Opening the Munguia vs. Derevyanchenko fight night with a four-round super welterweight fight, Anthony Saldivar (3-0, 1 KOs) of Ontario, California will face Jerome Clayton (2-1-1, 2 KOs) of Metairie, Louisiana.

Derevyanchenko Acknowledges That Munguia Showdown Could Be His Last On The Big Stage

sergiy-derevyanchenko%20(2)_1638577424.jpg

BY HANS THEMISTODE

Once viewed as a highly touted prospect, it appeared as though it was a matter of if, not when, the Ukrainian would drape his shoulders with a world title. Ultimately, of course, while his career has experienced several highs, he’s also undergone unfathomable lows.
Following his close and somewhat controversial split decision defeat at the hands of Daniel Jacobs, Derevyanchenko, soon after, would suffer three consecutive defeats against the middleweight division’s elite.
The rebuilding process since then has been somewhat quick. With a lopsided victory over Joshua Conley, Derevyanchenko will now step back into the spotlight.

On June 10th, at the Toyota Arena in California, the former title challenger will battle it out against Jaime Munguia. Considering that Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) is kept in high regard in countless boxing circles, Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs) is relentlessly working on his craft with trainer Andre Rozier shouting instructions in a practically empty gym.
Yet, in spite of his work ethic and unsurprising confidence, despondence begins to set in. Although victory is at the forefront of his mind, should another top-tier fighter plaster another loss to his resume, Derevyanchenko fears that it could be the final time that he stands alone under boxing’s limelight.
“I think yea,” said Derevyanchenko to BoxingScene.com when asked if this could be his last big run. “I think yea.”
Munguia, despite being a highly-ranked contender, has been openly chastised for the level of opposition he’s faced since popping onto the world scene. In 2022, in particular, even his biggest fans scratched their collective skulls as they attempted to do research on his selected foes. With wins over D’Mitrius Ballard, Jimmy Kelly, and Gonzalo Coria, the need to face more notable 160-pounders became undeniable.
Derevyanchenko, 37, fits the bill. And while he’s given essentially no shot according to oddsmakers, Derevyanchenko is well aware that a victory come June 10th, could push his career to new heights and reinvigorate his championship hopes.

“This is important. Important for my career. If I win this fight, my career will shoot up.”
